At 6 p.m. tonight, your local Apple store will start selling the new Apple operating system, Leopard.

But don’t head to the Apple store at South Coast Plaza tonight (see image below) — it’s closed until Nov. 2. Says the site:

During this time please visit the Apple Store, Fashion Island. Special Update: We will be closed for the Leopard World Premiere on Friday October 26.

Other OC options to buy Leopard tonight: Irvine Spectrum, Fashion Island in Newport Beach and the Shops at Mission Viejo. Stores will open until 10 p.m.

Click on the image to watch video demonstrations of the newest Apple iPods posted on You Tube by Irvine-based iLounge. The videos earned iLounge #24 most watched on YouTube for today (Sept. 6). If using YouTube video views as a ranking system – the new 160gb iPod Classic demo video wins with over 10,000 views as of the time I wrote this post.

September 5th, 2007, 9:55 am by

Steve Jobs played Santa again today, announcing the latest creations from Apple, Inc.

Read my previous posts here and here about the announcements. And, a big thanks to Irvine-based iLounge’s live postings.

UPDATES:

10:04 a.m. Mr. Jobs begins by saying “today we get to talk about music.”

10:06 a.m. A new iTunes will launch tonight – ringtones will be added next week. You can buy a song for 99 cents, and then make it a ringtone for another 99 cents. People make the ringtones themselves by choosing the 30 seconds, fades in and out before buying the ringtone.iPod shuffles.

ProductREDiPods10:13 a.m. Everything will be refreshed or replaced, Jobs said. Shuffle: refresh; product RED version available, holiday colors are purple, light green, light blue, silver and the product RED. Nanos: bigger and brighter display; full metal design; black, product RED, silver, blue and green.

10:29 a.m. The video iPods are renamed – iPod Classics. Colors: silver and black. Capacity: 160 gigabytes! Has 40 audio playing hours and seven video playing hours. Price is $349. Should be available in stores by this weekend, Jobs said.

10:49 a.m. iPod Touch also includes a new application – iTunes wifi – so that you can buy songs by using wifi. You get song previews – then buy and songs download to the device. Songs then are synced into your desktop computer’s iTunes on the next sync.

Starbucks10:57 a.m. The new wifi iTunes will also be available on iPhones. Steve also announces a new partnership with Starbucks. When walking by a Starbucks (when are we not) a Starbucks logo appears and you can see what music is playing in that Starbucks. Users can then with one-click download the song playing in the store.

11:08 a.m. iTunes/Starbucks song partnership launches first in October in Seattle and New York – LA to get it in February 2008, all major metros will be completed by 2009 (a little slow of a rollout, if you ask me).

11:10 a.m. Speech ends.

11:11 a.m. Steve’s back. iPhone prices are being lowered. iPhone 8-gb model now $399, starting today. The 4gb model is eliminated – only 8gb model.

All set for Sept. 5 – Love in the air?

August 28th, 2007, 4:36 pm by

Steve’s group just extended an invitation for media to join his Apple crew on Sept. 5 for a “special event.”

Appleinvite

Could it be that all of the iPod-update rumors are true? There is an iPod in the invite. Hmm… Stay tuned and we’ll all find out on Sept. 5.

In the time we have leading up to the announcements, please add in comments what you hope happens with the announcements. You can also read here about iLounge’s ideas on the next-gen iPod offerings.

UPDATE:

  • Read the iLounge story on this subject here. Read the AppleInsider story here.
  • One of the comments on the iLounge story names all of the albums shown ( Keane, Under The Iron Sea — The Flaming Lips, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots —Beastie Boys, The Mix-Up — Mika, Life In Cartoon Motion — Jack Johnson, In Between Dreams — Sonic Youth, Rather Ripped)
  • Many of the comments, and the AppleInsider authors, hint at more than just iPods – perhaps something to do with the Beatles?BeatlesiPod (AppleInsider notes that “The beat goes on” is the last line of the Beatles’ last press release.) We’ve seen artist-theme iPods in the past – perhaps Beatles’ iPods? – Check out this article that goes with this suggested Beatles iPod image.

Changes to the iPod family?

August 28th, 2007, 11:39 am by

That’s what all the Apple rumor sites are buzzing about this week.

iPodfamilyThinkSecret hints that new iPods will be released on Sept. 5 – as first reported by ArsTechnica. While that date is not confirmed, neither are the iPods to be relased. ThinkSecret writes that a second-generation iPod Nano is expected, but possibly also a new iPod that is based on Apple’s X operating system and uses a multi-touch screen – just like the iPhones.

Irvine-based iLounge.com doesn’t guess at what will be released but does call the possible new iPod the “iPod bilbo” until the real name is revealed. Also, it’s worth mentioning that iLounge recently released a guide to rebuilding or cleaning your iTunes library.

Announcing: New Apple products

August 7th, 2007, 10:56 am by

Steve Jobs

At 10 a.m. Steve began listing off his company’s latest products:

Thanks to MacNN that posted updates every two minutes to this site.

10:30 New iMacs: A combo of metal-casing, glass and plastic with two models available – jumps to big screens of 20 and 24 inches.iMacs.

New keyboards: Ultra-slim aluminum keyboards with hotkeys for Expose, dimmer, Dashboard, etc.

iPhoto2008An update for iLife: An ’08 version. So far we’ve heard about iPhoto that will allow people to view photos automatically arranged by events – rather than the current filmroll and albums that tend to stack up and be difficult to use. Plus, iPhoto will now sync somehow with the iPhone and .Mac in a better way (stay tuned for how). Also, iMovie will not just get updated, but will be a completely new program – according to MacNN’s live coverage of Steve’s speech.

11:00 More iLife news: iWeb – software for easily creating and publishing Web sites – will be updated. With that, live web widgets and a partnership with Google Maps. Garage Band in the ’08 package also gains new features.Garage Band 2008

11:05 More iLife: iLife ’08 will sell for $79. Software will come free with all new Apple computers.

dotMac Web Gallery .Mac: This is what most everyone has been waiting for: more storage on .Mac! Apple will offer 10 gigs for all subscribers. This is a critical enhancement for Apple to continue competing with Yahoo and Google which both have been offering much more storage space than Apple. This also will make the new iLife’s features shine – movie and photos sharing. As Steve was quoted by MacNN as saying “No more burning DVDs for grandma.”

11:15 Numbers 2008iWork ’08: Jobs reports that more than 1.8 million copies of this productivity suite have been sold to date. His first mention of new features is enhanced editing for text and backgrounds in Keynote (an Apple version of PowerPoint). Pages (Apple’s Word knockoff) will be split -much like Dreamweaver has a split view for code and visual web editing, Pages will be split with text editing and layout. Also, Pages will now have more than 140 templates – Steve says there “is a template for pretty much anything.” Also, iWork will add a spreadsheet function – if Apple is to start taking away from Microsoft’s Office – these spreadsheet and text products better be versatile!

11:20 More iWork: Will sell for $79, just like iLife.

11:25 Mac Minis: Will get faster processors.

11:38 Mr. Jobs’ event ends.

What does Steve have up his sleeve?

August 7th, 2007, 6:00 am by

Apple is rounding up some press types to go over to Cupertino for some Mac product announcements today. ThinkSecret, AppleInsider and other sites are buzzing in expectation of innovations that could be announced.

At the peak is rumors for the iMac desktop computers, mostly external changes such as metal casing (like that on PowerBooks). PowerBook.

Also rumored are new versions of iWork and iLife.

I’m not too into iWork, except that it does provide a low-cost alternative to buying expensive products like the Adobe Suite.

iLife.But….an iLife update? Now that would rock! Perhaps they could overhaul iCal, iPhoto and Address Book to enhance performance. While they’re at it, I think they should add features such as color-coded calendars to the iPhone.iCal

Please share on this poll which of these rumored products Apple should update next. Then, check back here to see what Apple announced.

What will Apple do?

January 9th, 2007, 7:48 am by

macworld2007logo.jpg

I’m far from San Francisco, where Steve Jobs will be giving his big speech at MacWorld Expo. It’s one of those events that not only the Mac community but media go into a frenzy because Steve tends to announce very cool, nicely designed products, like the iPod, the Mac Mini and all sorts of computers.

Nobody really knows what Steve will say today, not even some OC exhibitors who were here with me in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show, but headed up to SF last night to make it in time for MacWorld’s opening day. Some say the big news will be a cell phone. Others say it will be something for the TV. The excitement surrounding this is so big, I’m already getting interview requests from people who can comment about the new iTunes cell phone.

So, I can’t be there to report, but let me refer you to a great source — and based in Irvine — for Mac news: iLounge.com. They will likely be reporting live and posting to the web immediately.

In the meantime, scanning through the CES exhibitor list last night, one of the newest exhibitors stuck out. I wonder what this means?
