Ask iGirl: iPhone won’t work with certain headphones

October 10th, 2007, 10:50 am by

Ask iGirl Question: Okay, I give up on where to find/buy the extenders so I can use my Sony sport buds with my iPhone?? I’m done waiting on Apple to make sport bud style headphones. And any “earbuds” fall out if my ears while running. I need the kind that hook over your ear and will not drop out while running! I know I will lose the microphone function by using Sony but I don’t care. ~ Melissa

iGirl: I looked around and could not find sport-style iPhone headphones either. The problem is that many third-party headphones don’t work with the iPhone’s headphone plug-in port – to get both channels of sound to play the user must press down on the headphone jack.

Warning against iHacking

September 26th, 2007, 9:21 am by

iPhonecoverflow

At the end of this week, Apple promises an update for iPhones that includes a wireless iTunes store. And surprise, surprise, the update could result in “irreparable damage” to anyone who has unlocked their iPhone. Who didn’t know this was coming?

The company issued a statement earlier this week warning against hacking your $599 $399 phone to get it to work with other cell phone companies, play SuperMario and more. The statement goes on to say that if you mess with your phone, any damage is not Apple’s fault and the warranty is void. According to this article, the hackers are vowing to persist hacking the phones.

What do you think, is Apple just trying to scare folks away from unlocking phones? Why? Will you hack your iPhone? Why?

iGirl finds use for $100

September 18th, 2007, 3:10 pm by

What a day!

Last week I went to the online Apple store and registered for my $100 rebate for buying the iPhone before the $200 price cut. (More details on the rebate HERE.)

iGirlShuffle

And, I immediately traded the $100 Apple store credit for a Product RED Shuffle. Check out that I got it personalized, for free, with “Sonya iGirl Smith” on the back.

I checked in with Editor Benjamin Etzioni who I work with – and who bought an iPhone at the same store and on the same day as I. He said that he’s planning to sell his Apple store credit taking the highest bidder. He said he won’t accept below $90. Also, he’s only selling it because he found out that the rebates can’t be used in iTunes (what?!?).

Anyone else out there have plans for using their iPhone rebates?

… is designed to get more clicks for Local.com:

Local.com

The Web search engine company today announced an iPhone giveaway for its Local Mobile service.

Local Mobile is a version of Local.com designed for wireless phones or mobile device users, much like services created by Google, Mapquest, TIME magazine and other Web sites.

Jennifer Black, Local.com’s vice president of marketing, said on a phone interview today that the iPhone was picked for the promotion because it is “the hottest new device.”

And, if you’re wondering when the company bought the iPhones, yes they paid the pre-price reduction price of $599. The company plans to use Apple’s $100 rebates to buy iPods personalized with the company’s logo for Christmas presents for vendors.

Good reason for Lansner to buy an iPhone

September 11th, 2007, 9:00 am by

Searching around through iPhone applications, I found this mortgage calculator called iPay.

iPay

Perhaps this is reason enough for our real estate-blogger Jon Lansner to buy an iPhone. It’s simple, works well on the phone and offers a good service. Me, well I’m not even close to buying a home so I’ll have to wait on this app.

Have a favorite iPhone application out there? Send it on in!

iGirl review: iPhone headset

September 10th, 2007, 3:00 pm by
  • Product: Mobile Stereo Headset for iPhonerivetheadset
  • Price:$29.99
  • Company: Rivet
  • My rating: Four out of five apples.
  • Share what you think of this product by clicking here.
  • My favorite feature: The headset cord is almost tangle-free. Sure, it had the tendency like all cords to twist and turn in my purse – but the cord is such that it barely becomes tangled and it is easy to untangle. (My previous Sony headphones become so tangled that the cord broke inside).
  • What I like about it: Great sound for the price. Comfortable to wear – especially with the three sizes included of earbud gel tips. The headset is set up so that no connector is needed to connect to the iPhone (I have to use a 2-inch long extender with my iPhone so I can use my normal red and black v-moda headphones). Headset includes a one-touch button on the cord so that while listening to music that fades out and you can answer the call – after the call the music fades back in).
  • What I don’t like about it: The headphones’ two-year limited warranty is short compared to the lifetime warranty offered with other headphones (but those usually start at $70). The sound quality could be better – but hey, these are only $29.99.
  • Other reviews: Amazon, iPhoneTower.

One million iPhones

September 10th, 2007, 1:01 pm by

Apple announced this morning that the one millionth iPhone was sold yesterday – 74 days after it started selling on June 29. iPhone

“One million iPhones in 74 days-it took almost two years to achieve this milestone with iPod,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We can’t wait to get this revolutionary product into the hands of even more customers this holiday season.”

Now Apple still has a lot of work to do to reach its goal of 1 percent market share (10 million units) in 2008. Share in comments if you think Apple will reach that number.

This milestone comes a few days after Apple announced a $200 price drop for the iPhone. At the same time, after iPhone early buyers called foul, Apple announced a $100 rebate for those who bought the device before the price drop.

NBC and Apple show down

September 7th, 2007, 3:00 am by

NBCandiTunesBetter get your fix for The Office, LOST and other NBC shows on iTunes now.

After a tiff over pricing for NBC’s shows on Apple’s iTunes the NBC-iTunes contract was pulled.

According to a Reuters article, Steve Jobs said yesterday:

“We hope they’ll reconsider their decisions over time and maybe find out that iTunes and iPods are a great way to digitally distribute their content to tens or maybe hundreds of millions of customers around the world.”

A New York Times article said that the NBC vs. Apple highlights “the escalating tension between Apple and media companies, which are unhappy that Apple will not give them more control over the pricing of songs and videos that are sold on iTunes.”

Of course, you’ll be able to download all the new NBC shows at Amazon.com’s Unbox, which announced the new deal with NBC the day before Steve’s apology. Pilot episodes will be free and start showing up Sept. 10 at Unbox before the actual broadcast. Ensuing episodes will show up the day after broadcast for $1.99.
