How to uh, do a, y’know, product review video

June 16th, 2008, 6:56 am by

My husband stumbled on a video on Buy.com’s web site while searching for an Apple-friendly keyboard. I thought it was a joke.

A half-dazed girl (who reminded us of that is-she-stoned girl from Apple’s Switched campaign) stands in front of her white iMac and blabbers on about how she liked the keyboard because it was white and “it looks good on any color desk.” And how the keys were thick. And it had a USB port. And then she only gave it a 3 out of 5 rating even though she liked it and it did everything a keyboard should do.

We laughed a bit too much and I felt compelled to share with readers who also might need a laugh on a Monday:

How to uh, do a, y’know, product review video

But the laugh could be on us. Apparently, “soccergirl11″ will get paid every time someone watches her review and we watched it a few times. Plus I watched it a few more times in order to transcribe it (bold added for emphasis):

I’m here today to talk to you about this keyboard. Uh, this keyboard is really easy to use and I like the color. I like white keyboards because, um, it just shows up and it looks good on any color desk, you know. And then, uh, this keyboard especially, I mean there are some keyboards that have really thin keys but this keyboard is easy to use. The uh, the keys are thick so when you’re typing uh, you don’t have to stumble as much because your um, you know, it’s easy to use and there’s bigger keys so you know what you’re pressing. That’s uh my favorite thing about the keyboard. And on this keyboard there’s this USB drive port on the back so you can plug it into this, which plugs into your computer so the info can be transferred. So, overall, I would rate this keyboard a 3 out of 5.

And I, uh, shouldn’t poke fun since I’m like a totally big user of the like’s and the y’know’s when I did video reviews.

Nevertheless, I stick to my headline regardless of whether soccergirl11 offered us an insightful video because she’s getting paid! The video came from Expo TV, a site that pays consumers who own products to do product-review videos. The more viewers, the more money in your PayPal account. In March, it looks like qualified videos made an average of $23.25 each. Not bad for a few minutes of work.

Sonnet discounts more iPod accessories

June 13th, 2008, 6:19 am by

Sonnet’s PodFreq FM tuner for the iPodSonnet Technologies in Irvine has cut 20 percent off the price of PodFreq, which lets you play an iPod over a car’s FM radio. It’s now $39.95. Good deal? Shop around. Amazon sells the same Sonnet gadget for $30.78. Buy.com’s price is $26.24, plus $4.49 for shipping.

Earlier this week, Sonnet dropped the price of its battery charger kit for iPhones or iPods by 25 percent to $29.95.

I’ve mentioned this in the past that the PodFreq is one of the better FM tuners I’ve tested. But I don’t need it anymore since I have a plug in my car for an iPod.

Ask iGirl: iPhone won’t work with certain headphones

October 10th, 2007, 10:50 am by

Ask iGirl Question: Okay, I give up on where to find/buy the extenders so I can use my Sony sport buds with my iPhone?? I’m done waiting on Apple to make sport bud style headphones. And any “earbuds” fall out if my ears while running. I need the kind that hook over your ear and will not drop out while running! I know I will lose the microphone function by using Sony but I don’t care. ~ Melissa

iGirl: I looked around and could not find sport-style iPhone headphones either. The problem is that many third-party headphones don’t work with the iPhone’s headphone plug-in port – to get both channels of sound to play the user must press down on the headphone jack.

They include button-less touch-sensor panels, audible alerts and blue LED indicators that light up during operation. They also have a high-gloss finish and smooth exteriors for a minimalist design.

How Applesque… even if they don’t perfectly match any iBooks, iMacs or other Apple computers.

Prices: SCX-4500, $299; ML-1630, $199

The men’s shirts that graphic designer Sal Loredo promised when Tamara first blogged about PodWare in May, are here in black and white with large Apple-power button logos. The cotton shirts are double-needle hemmed to prevent them from stretching from the weight of the iPods.

The shirts work with the first-generation iPod shuffles and the first and second-generation Nanos (1, 2 and 4-gigabyte models). Sal says the shirts are for those who “use their iPod in daily activities.” The men’s shirts cost $25.99 each.
