iGirl review: iPhone headset

September 10th, 2007, 3:00 pm by
  • Product: Mobile Stereo Headset for iPhonerivetheadset
  • Price:$29.99
  • Company: Rivet
  • My rating: Four out of five apples.
  • Share what you think of this product by clicking here.
  • My favorite feature: The headset cord is almost tangle-free. Sure, it had the tendency like all cords to twist and turn in my purse – but the cord is such that it barely becomes tangled and it is easy to untangle. (My previous Sony headphones become so tangled that the cord broke inside).
  • What I like about it: Great sound for the price. Comfortable to wear – especially with the three sizes included of earbud gel tips. The headset is set up so that no connector is needed to connect to the iPhone (I have to use a 2-inch long extender with my iPhone so I can use my normal red and black v-moda headphones). Headset includes a one-touch button on the cord so that while listening to music that fades out and you can answer the call – after the call the music fades back in).
  • What I don’t like about it: The headphones’ two-year limited warranty is short compared to the lifetime warranty offered with other headphones (but those usually start at $70). The sound quality could be better – but hey, these are only $29.99.
  • Other reviews: Amazon, iPhoneTower.

Wood you like one of these?

September 4th, 2007, 1:18 pm by

Now don’t get me wrong, iPhones look uber-cool as is – but wouldn’t they look even better encased in wood?

Miniotcases

MiniotcasefrontThe Holland-based company Miniot hand makes these iWood cases from endangered woods for the iPhone, iPod Nano and iPod video. My favorite is the Padouk case.

The cases cost about $100 each and you can choose to add a logo, monogram or matching dock made from the same block of wood as the case.

The folks over at Gizmodo like, but don’t recommend buying the case. iLounge gave the case a B+ – raving about the professional style of the case and complete protection, but noted the iWood’s expensive price.

August 30th, 2007, 6:00 am by

Sonnet’s Fusion D800RAID

The latest storage gadget from Sonnet Technologies in Irvine is essentially a computer with 6-terabytes of storage (that’s 6,144 gigabytes for those of us stuck in 2006). Sonnet’s Fusion RAID storage systems now are terabyte ready.

Sonnet added Hitatchi’s terabyte Serial ATA Ultrastar drive to its back-up storage systems (or RAIDs) and offers the Fusion D800 RAID with up to 6 TB. In tests, Sonnet saw 506 MB/sec read speeds and 562 MB/sec write speeds.

Why do you need this?

Irvine-based iLounge.com lets everyone know that DLO just launched a new OpenFM application.openFM

This is an online tool people can use to search for the clearest FM station in their area by city and state or zip code. And, it’ll work with iPhones’ web browsers to sweeten the deal.

Bring on the bikini, it’s still summer

August 24th, 2007, 9:41 am by

Incipio’s Blueberry BikiniHey everyone, iGirl here. Sorry for my short absence…I’ve been out of commission lately as I recover from getting all four wisdom teeth pulled…ugh.

And…I’m back just in time to fit in a style scoop for summer. Bikini cases for the iPhone.

Incipio, the Yorba Linda-based online store, says that the “sexy case only covers the bare essentials.”

I’m not sure if this would be the right case for me. Yes, I love that it’s called a bikini and comes in 12 colors (including blueberry as pictured here) and it allows users to actually use the phone while in the case. But, the case (much like a bikini) only covers the bare essentials….offering not as much protection as other cases (much like one-piece swim suits).

But, it’s worth mentioning that the company has a wide-range of iPhone cases….most of which do cover more than the bikini. My favorites are the hipster and the dermashot. I like those, personally, because I always look for cases that offer very good protection, yet I can use the phone while in the case.

But, seriously, I want to know who dreams up these funky names….I love ‘em!

Sonnet unveils FireWire and USB ExpressCard

August 23rd, 2007, 12:00 am by

Sonnet Technologies FireWire/USB ExpressCard/34

For the second day in a row, Irvine’s Sonnet Technologies offers another way to make use of that ExpressCard slot: Add more FireWire and USB ports. If you’re putting off Mac accessories until Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) is released in October, no worries. Sonnet’s FireWire/USB ExpressCard/34 will work with the new system too. Also works with Windows computers.

Has two FireWire 400 ports (What?? No FireWire 800??) and one USB 2.0. Available now from Sonnet. Price: $69.95.

Another use for ExpressCard: Sonnet’s 21-in-1 card reader

August 22nd, 2007, 12:00 am by

Sonnet’s 21-in-1 Multimedia Memory Card Reader ExpressCard

What else to do with that ExpressCard slot on your laptop? Get this handy 21-in-1 memory card reader from Sonnet Technologies in Irvine. It even reads the elusive XD memory, whichi I unfortunately settled for with my digital camera.

This is much better than my current method of keeping multiple versions of the same card reader in all my work spaces so I’m never without one. I can just leave this in my laptop! And it looks like it really can read the plethora of memory cards showing up in cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players and cameras.

What’s an ExpressCard? The new Sonnet 21-in-1 Multimedia Memory Card Reader ExpressCard reads:

  • Memory Stick
  • MMC (Multimedia Card)
  • SD (Secure Digital)
  • XD-Picture Card
  • and all the variations thereof….

Other specs: works with MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.4 or later, PCs with ExpressCard 34 or 54 slots running Windows XP SP2 or Vista. Price: $29.95. Check Sonnet’s site for more details.

Sporty new laptop bags from Targus

August 21st, 2007, 12:21 pm by

Targus radius convertable backpackThe computer bag mecca in OC has some brand new offerings from Anaheim’s Targus.

Dubbed the ‘radius’ line (note the lower case ‘r’), the new bags look pretty solid. Plus, it’s Targus so I know the bags are durable else they risk tarnishing their rep as a solid computer bag maker.

Check out the orange and charcoal gray radius bags at the end of this post. I haven’t poked and prodded these bags, which target the Mac crowd. But I think I can fit my Dell in one.

Here’s a few that caught my eye:

Targus radius convertible messenger/backpack (pictured above): The black/olive bag (Model # TSB07701US) fits a 15-inch MacBook Pro and features a molded compartment for added protection. Special compartments for stashing an Apple Mighty Mouse, MacSafe Power Adapter, Apple Remote and iPod. Targus radius messengerAnd, of course, the bag converts from backpack to messenger. Price: $100 (Amazon has it for $69) and weighs 4.18 pounds.

Targus radius messenger: Fits 15-inch MacBook Pro. Nice touch: A locking zipper to secure the special laptop compartment. Targus radius vertical messengerThe case (Model # TSM040US) is pictured on right. Price: $90 and weighs 3.08 pounds.

Targus radius vertical messenger: Lots of pockets to fit Apple-related products. The case (Model # TSM043US) is also water-resistant polyester material in olive and black. Click picture on left for a larger view. Price: $60 and weighs 2.2 pounds.

All bags available at Amazon, for now.

Other bags I liked on Targus’ site:

Targus radius backpackTargus radius backpackThe Targus radius backpack: Fits a 15-inch Apple notebook. It includes a removable Orange padded notebook compartment and lots of pockets for accessories and other electronic junk. There’s even a special iPod pocket. Price: $70 at Targus and a mere $24.99 at Amazon.
