Check who near you has flu on Google phone, iPhone

December 2nd, 2008, 3:34 pm by

Maybe it’s because I have a scratchy throat today and a few random sniffles, but the news from Zicam Cold Remedy caught my eye.

Matrixx Initiatives Inc., which makes Zicam, launched the Zicam Cold & Flu Companion mobile application today for the T-Mobile G1, better known as the first Google phone. An iPhone version will be out within the next few weeks at the Apple App store.

With this software, users can check cold and flu activity by zip code. This was inspired by Google, which launched “Flu Trends” on Nov. 11. Flu Trends can estimate flu activity by region. Google gets its data from weekly and historical Center for Disease Control reports plus it own database tracking the number of flu-related searches users type in.

The Zicam tool shows the percentage of sick people in a zip code, symptoms to look for and the latest flu news.  And since this is free (read: marketing tool), the app offers coupons and addresses of nearby stores that sell Zicam products.

To learn more about the app, visit zicam.com/tools/mobile.

Of course if you don’t have an iPhone or G1, you can still track the flu around you at Zicam’s site HERE. Or, download the flu widget to your computer. (Oh snap! Flu levels are moderate here in Santa Ana.)

Sonnet cuts price of iPhone battery charger

June 10th, 2008, 5:07 pm by

Sonnet Technologies’ Volta rechargeable iPod battery kitSo… the new iPhone is cheaper than the old one but the monthly fees are higher. You’ve got to save money somewhere.

Sonnet Technologies, an Irvine company that makes upgrade kits for Macs, just cut 25 percent off the price of its Volta rechargeable battery pack for the iPod. It’s now $29.95 (used to be $39.95). I haven’t tried it but Sonnet claims it “extends playback times by up to 300%.”

Plus, Sonnet expects it to be compatible with the new iPhone. It already works with many iPod models and the original iPhone. An interesting note: when the Volta is fully charged, it has enough juice to charge an iPod battery three times. More details at Sonnet’s site.

The new features:

One, two, three billion iTunes songs and counting

August 2nd, 2007, 12:27 pm by

iTunes.Apple recently announced that more than three billion songs have been purchased and downloaded from iTunes.
common.jpg
And, to do my part on reaching 4 billion, I downloaded the new Common album this morning.

The release also notes that “iTunes recently surpassed Amazon and Target to become the third largest music retailer in the U.S.”

Sure I’m a regular iTunes buyer, but sometimes it’s just nice owning the physical album. Even though iTunes finally added automatic-artwork-finding to the program, it’s still oh so nice to buy a CD, unwrap the plastic wrap and flip through the lyrics, photos and artwork provided with the CD.

Maybe I’m just old-fashioned. What do you think?
