Alt+Save: Deals and freebiesPeople really like lists and I’ve been meaning to compile my own useful list of ways to save money on technology and more. I have yet to do that but in the meantime, I scoured the web to help readers explore the efforts of other list-happy authors. Here they are in no particular order:

1. Printer bonanza: save money and get the right printer for your small business (PC World) It’s the end of the financial year for printer companies so now’s the time to buy.

Getting the best deal from Buy.com

May 6th, 2008, 5:01 am by

Here’s another excerpt in the ongoing series about online deals. Previous chapters: How FatWallet tracks down deals, Deal Locker guarantees coupon codes.

Buy.com is based in Aliso Viejo, Calif.Psst … Want to know how to get an extra special discount at Buy.com? Sign up for its affiliate program.

Affiliate programs are the force behind online discount sites, such as FatWallet and Deal Locker. They provide the bargain-hunting world with coupon codes and special sales. So when a consumer stops by a bargain site, selects the deal link to, say, Buy.com, and makes a purchase, Buy.com and the affiliate split the profit.

Jeff Wisot, Buy.com’s vice president of marketingIt’s not much money, said Jeff Wisot, Buy.com’s vice president of marketing (photo of Wisot on left by OCRegister photographer Jebb Harris). The company will only say it’s “above 3 percent.”

Truthfully, though, all the work required to become an affiliate likely dissuades users from setting up their own stores just to get a discount for themselves. But sites that do include Buy.com as one of hundreds of deal sites can make a living off such programs.

“Buy.com’s Top 30 affiliates can each bring hundreds to thousands of orders each day,” he said.

Buy.com affiliates also get a sneak peek at what’s going on sale. A few weeks ago, affiliates learned that a Soyo Bluetooth headset went on sale for $10. Now, it’s $27. On Monday, a Lenovo laptop for $399 sold out within hours, thanks to affiliates.

But, says Wisot, you don’t have to be an affiliate to get the best deal from Buy.com.

Deal Locker guarantees (some) coupon codes

May 5th, 2008, 12:52 pm by

Part 2 in an ongoing series about online deals. See part one on FatWallet and part three on Buy.com.

Behind the scenesWhen I search for coupon codes, most of the time I don’t expect them to work. Possible reasons include the code expired, was used by the maximum number of shoppers or, well, I don’t know. The codes just don’t work.

Jonathan Lieberman feels my pain. He’s president of Deal Locker, a year-old deal site based in San Diego.

Deal Locker checkmarkHe started the site for the same reason I search for coupon codes: “I was 100 percent driven by the fact that I hated when I got to the checkout, that empty coupon code box was just staring me in the face. It’s a truly frustrating experience. But I could do something about it,” he said.

He’s a developer and one code led to another code led to Deal Locker.

Deal Locker gets coupon codes and discounts directly from 3,000 stores. But unlike some sites, it strives to only post codes that work. Deal codes it gets directly from the stores or manufacturers get a ‘Guaranteed to work‘ logo next to those offers. How Deal Locker guarantees its codes work

But since it also accepts coupon codes and tips from users, it needed a way to vet the working from the non working. With only 3.5 employees, it relies on users to perfect the system. Every coupon that didn’t come from the manufacturer has a little link next to it asking, “Did it work for you?”

If the coupon doesn’t work for 66 percent of people who vote, it is removed.
