Vizio sells 280,000+ HDTVs over Black Friday week

December 1st, 2009, 7:33 am by

Vizio Inc., an Irvine HDTV sellerEvery year before Thanksgiving, Vizio tells consumers ahead of time how much prices will drop for special Black Friday sales. So maybe it’s not surprise that the company was rewarded with record-breaking sales.

The Irvine HDTV seller said this morning that U.S. consumers bought more than 280,000 HDTVs last week, up 40 percent from last year’s Black Friday sales. Vizio credited stores like Costco Wholesale and Sam’s Club for efficiently selling the TVs.

But it’s also new technology that probably wowed consumers. Vizio’s new TruLED technology inside brightens up the picture as necessary. Faster 120/240 Hz refresh rates to help keep video smooth during fast-moving scenes.

More than 50,000 120/240 Hz HDTVs were sold, up 945 percent from the same time last year. Vizio also pointed out that consumers snapped up 50-inch TVs or larger, with the company selling 20,000 of them, or 1,000 percent more than last year.

It’s a great way for the company to end the year, which included rising to the top of the U.S. LCD TV heap, winning some key patent fights and expanding into TV accessories business with a new speaker bar, video cables and a Blu-ray Disc player.

But, of course, the year isn’t quite over. Beginning Thursday, Vizio is taking $100 off its 40-inch LCD HDTV (VO400E). The $599.99 TV will be at Costco between Dec. 3 to Dec. 20. At Walmart, a 19-inch TV is now $178 through the end of the year.

“We consistently strive to offer consumers more and are pleased to see the great success of our high performance products which allow us to continue to grow and expand VIZIO products to a wider range of consumers seeking the latest technology at a great value,” Laynie Newsome VIZIO Co-founder and V.P. Sales and Marketing Communications, said in a statement.

‘Cyber Monday’ starts as online stores recover from Black Friday

November 30th, 2009, 8:08 am by

Cyber Monday 2009The Monday after Thanksgiving has become another day for online retailers to pitch sales to customers. But it looks like some retailers won’t need to rely as heavily on the so-called “Cyber Monday” sales.

Black Friday was fab, according to many reports.

Aliso Viejo’s Buy.com said today that Friday was its “Best Black Friday in Company History.” The company surpassed last year’s record Black Friday sales. In a statement, the company also mentioned that its Marketplace of third-party sellers had its biggest day as well, making up 30 percent of the site’s total orders that day, or 120 percent more orders than last year.

Amazon.com had several “lightning deals” throughout the day as a way to keep customers checking back with the site. The company is taking the same tactic for today’s deals in order to keep customers checking back on the site. No word on how sales went but Amazon just announced that its e-book reader Kindle had its best-ever sales month in November.

But even as shoppers apparently purchased more than last year, they didn’t necessarily spend more. Marketwatch is reporting that key retail stocks are down because average holiday spending fell 7 percent to $343.

So, maybe the deals are better this year? I, personally, couldn’t help but stock up on Blu-ray Discs on Black Friday as many dropped to $10. And, as many readers know, this is the year of the $99 Blu-ray player and in some cases, players were even much less.

Analysts are saying that Cyber Monday, a made-up holiday for web retailers, doesn’t have the momentum it once did. As a day online stores would attract customers as they head back at work, Cyber Monday has been hurt by retailers who start their promotions earlier.

Still, the idea of losing out on a $99 Beatles Rock Band at Amazon or the $280 Acer netbook at Buy.com today will be distracting for workers everywhere.

50% off Roku HD to first 500 Black Friday shoppers

November 26th, 2009, 10:49 pm by

Roku HDXR digital video playerPassing along… Hey Black Friday shoppers, the month-old Roku HD-XR Player (mentioned here in October) is half off to the first 500 customers beginning at 8 a.m. California time on Black Friday. That makes it $64.99 and Roku is tossing in free shipping.

The Roku boxes plug into a TV and allows users to stream movies from Netflix, Amazon Video and other online sources. There are three available, this one stream high-definition video and has an HDMI port. These are devices that give consumers more options on their big-screen TV without having to pay a monthly cable bill.

Since I know some readers were interested in this device, I just wanted to share this deal that was e-mailed to me by the company. If you’re interested, here are the steps to getting the 50 percent discount:

1. Go to blackfriday.roku.com starting at 8 a.m. Pacific Standard Time Friday.

2. Follow the instructions and enter the code “hdxrsteal” at checkout. The code can be applied to one Roku HD-XR Player.

Vizio confirms Black Friday prices: $99 Blu-ray player, more

November 18th, 2009, 3:33 pm by

Black Friday 2009Most consumers will agree that Vizio Inc. makes a decent HDTV that usually cost less than the competition. While the quality is debatable (let me reword this) not everyone is gaga for the brand, Vizio’s big pricing extravaganza begins right … around… NOW!

Just got a list of Vizio’s Black Friday 2009 prices starting with a $99 BLU-RAY PLAYER! But we all knew Blu-ray was going to hit $99 this Christmas, right?

Noticeably absent: Vizio’s VIA TV, the Internet TV I’ve been waiting for. Ah well. I hate shopping on Black Friday anyway.

But for everyone else who needs a new TV, here is Vizio holiday price lineup: Read the rest of this entry »

Buy.com says it had biggest Black Friday. Ever.

December 1st, 2008, 6:18 pm by

Buy.com is based in Aliso Viejo, Calif.Recession-schushmession. Buy.com just reported that it had its biggest Black Friday sales day in company history, with over 40 percent growth in both revenue and customer orders compared to last year.

The Aliso Viejo company didn’t offer us any actual numbers so we could check them out. However, back in May, Buy.com CEO Neel Grover spoke to me and offered some details. At the time, it was expecting to post its sixth straight profitable quarter, which it then did a week later, with $1.4 million in profit. It previously reported income of $411,000 for the third quarter of 2007, an improvement of the prior year’s loss of $5.6 million.

“We make money on every product we sell — we make a little less money than our competitors,” he told me.

Buy.com did make a big fuss over the holiday weekend. Going into Thanksgiving, it had a pre-turkey day sale subsidized by PayPal. Then over the weekend, it continued to post new deals. And of course, there were today’s Cyber Monday deals.

Maybe the news shouldn’t be too unexpected. Retailers, apparently, fared much better on Black Friday than they had anticipated, according to a report on the Register’s Retail blog.

The company has been around since the mid 1990s, although many had written it off after the dot-com bubble burst. Under the radar, Buy.com has continued to attract customers. According to its latest release, it has 12 million customer accounts, up from 10 million a year ago.

Online shopping tips … from a vacuum cleaner?

November 26th, 2008, 3:47 pm by

Black Friday sales — or should we just rename the whole late November shopping extraganza? — have begun. I’ve mentioned the sneaky Black Friday Web sites before, but those are now moot since the ads have been published. I expect to see a lot of deals online, especially after Buy.com’s Jeff Wisot told me that it is getting especially good deals this year:

“What we’re seeing is that many of the big brick and mortar and discounts stores have canceled their purchase orders because they’re not anticipating the sales anymore. So manufacuters are coming to us and giving us better deals to choose from,” he said. “Last year, e-tail and retail didn’t have to discount as much as they are now. They didn’t have to fight as much as they have before.”

Still, from the poll I offered to readers on who’s planning to shop before Black Friday, the huge majority of votes said “I have no money.”

But I’m sure some people will be shopping over the next several days. I thought about compiling a tip sheet to online shopping and then I heard from reader “SingingBingoLady,” who stumbled upon a handy guide from, of all sources, Dirt Devil (yes, the vacuum cleaner)!

In between ads for vacuum cleaners, it mentions not only the Black Friday Web sites, but the Cyber Monday sites (bestcybermondaysales.com, cybermonday.com, cybermonday.fm).

It also offers tips on getting a better deal (if an expired coupon code has a number like “11″ in it, try replacing it with “12″ if you’re shopping in December). Of course, it lists about a dozen sites to hunt for coupon code discounts, like FatWallet.com, RetailMeNot.com and DealCatcher.com.

But perhaps most useful are niche sites to help consumers find exactly what they want. Sites are broken down into categories, including cigars, sporting goods, pets, automotive memorialbilia, vinyl albums, etc.

With all that effort, I figured, why should I bother? Check out the Dirt Devil guide to online shopping HERE. (Thanks SingingBingoLady!)

  • Vizio announces Black Friday TV discounts

    November 26th, 2008, 2:33 pm by

Vizio has come a long way from the small upstart it was a few years ago. The Irvine-based TV seller is now one of the biggest names in TVs, plus it can afford San Diego Charger LaDainian Tomlinson as its spokesman.

So it’s good to see that Vizio continues to drop prices on its TVs. The company just announced its Black Friday sales:

Just got Vizio’s price list for its Black Friday specials.

But before your mouth starts frothing, I looked at the specs more closely and the best deals involve some high-definition sacrifice.

The 37-inch TV seems like an outrageous deal but it’s just 720p, not full 1080p resolution (although newbies may not notice the difference). And there are the minimal 2 HDMI ports to hook up a high-definition DVD player, cable box, game console or other HD device.

The 32-inch plasma and the 19-inch LCD also aren’t 1080p. The 32-inch, however, does have 3 HDMI ports.

Nevertheless, the prices are decent and are about the same as other brands that I’ve spotted going on sale this Friday.

What is not on sale — and not yet available – is Vizio’s 55-inch LCD TV with speedy 120 Hertz so there’s no lag when viewing sports or other fast-paced action. That TV is supposed to go on sale in January for $1,999.99.

  • Paypal ‘sponsoring’ Buy.com’s pre-Black Friday sale

    November 24th, 2008, 12:01 am by

Buy.com will have its usual Black Friday sale on the day after Thanksgiving. But the Aliso Viejo Internet retailer is also prepping for what it expects to be its biggest day of the quarter so far: the day before Thanksgiving. It’s teamed up with online payment company PayPal to provide additional discounts.

Are the dot-com deals coming back?

“To get to those prices at 85 percent off, we’re having partners come in and help,” said Jeff Wisot, Buy.com’s vice president of marketing.  ”On the day before Thanksgiving, PayPal is sponsoring that sale.”

Now… don’t get too excited. The only PayPal-sponsored deal Wisot shared with me was a $20 MP3 player that will include a $10 instant rebate if you use PayPal’s online payment service. Fifty percent is a nice discount, but I can’t imagine how good a $20 MP3 player can be in the first place. Let’s hope the PayPal savings goes beyond cheap electronic trinkets.

But back up. The Wednesday before Black Friday is a big shopping day?

“It’s an enormous day for us,” Wisot said. “It’s the biggest day of the quarter to date.”

That is, it’s the biggest day of the quarter before Black Friday. Because of competitive reasons, Wisot won’t say if Wednesday sales have trumped Black Friday’s or the following Monday’s in prior years. And he’s not completely sure why people shop before Black Friday sales are available. But he has a few theories. Read the rest of this entry »
