Vizio hires Beyoncé as new spokesperson

January 8th, 2010, 10:50 am by

Vizio has gone big time here at the Consumer Electronics Show with a prime spot in the convention center hallway for attendees to play with the company’s Internet TVs. The Irvine TV seller has banners everywhere. And now, just minutes ago, the company signed a 3-year deal to have singer Beyoncé Knowles – Carter endorse its products.

Can we all say Wow!

The 3-year agreement means the singer will be part of Vizio’s ad campaign, which could include a SuperBowl commercial. Previously, Vizio had San Diego Chargers’ LaDainian Tomlinson.

Beyoncé and Vizio may seem like a strange coupling but the company has really expanded its product line once again here at CES.  I just spotted some brand new wireless headphones that Vizio plans to start selling this year. The new line appeals to the fashion minded who want more than the basic black set. Pink, blue, quilted are the some of the models I saw at the company’s secret suite at the Wynn Hotel. More on this later.

As the new face of Vizio, Beyoncé will also “participate in the design and performance characteristics of new products,” the company said.

“Beyoncé is in an elite class of entertainers who are globally known and respected for their talent on stage and in front of the camera,” Laynie Newsome, Vizio’s cofounder and vice president of sales and marketing communications said in a press release. “We believe both VIZIO and Beyoncé are closely aligned as American success stories who have redefined the rules in our respective industries.”

As for Beyoncé’s statement: ”What I love about VIZIO is how committed they have been to customers and their focus on delivering tremendous performance at a great value … As a performer, I can relate to that, because my fans spend their hard-earned money to see me perform, and I give everything I can to make sure I exceed their expectations. I’m excited to be associated with such a successful company.”

More on Vizio’s CES announcements coming soon… Stay tuned.

D-Link shows Boxee, touchscreen router, 3G doorbell

January 8th, 2010, 10:38 am by

dlinkimg_7660The Boxee Box from Fountain Valley’s D-Link Systems is getting a lot of attention at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show because it will make the free Web TV service available to more people everywhere who don’t want to hook up a PC to their TV or buy a game console.

Boxee Box by D-LinkThe surprisingly small box  – less than 5-square inches — runs the exact software as regular Boxee. For those unfamiliar with the product, Boxee offers an online library of 200 applications. Many are video providers, which allow consumers to watch TV shows, movies and other video inexpensively from the Web.

The draw is likely the Boxee service itself. It’s clean, user friendly and thorough. The service also will scan computers and devices attached to the home’s network in search of photos, home or recorded movies and music files. Boxee offers a menu to easily access all that content. Can a TV ever be too thin?

January 8th, 2010, 9:33 am by

Samsung's skinny 0.3-inch thick LED 9000 HDTV, side viewSkinny TVs are getting outrageously slim. The new Samsung 65-inch LED 9000 HDTV, announced at the Consumer Electronics Show, is a mere 0.3 inch thick but manages to include 3D processor and LED technology (see image on right — ya, the line!). They compared it to the width of a pencil.

How did Samsung squeeze those features into such a skinny TV? It built them into the stand. This TV also comes with a nifty remote that has a second TV display built into control. More on this later. No price was available but the TV should be out this year.

Keep in mind, at last year’s CES, Panasonic showed a 0.3-inch thick plasma TV as well (read: “Panasonic’s 0.3-inch skinny TV“). That model was apparently a prototype.

Some images from Samsung’s exhibit are below. These show two of the skinny LEDs back to back. The middle image shows the thicker stand behind the TV that stores all the goods:

Next up in 3D: Samsung’s 3D camera for consumers

January 8th, 2010, 8:15 am by

Samsung 3D camera prototypeWith all the 3D HDTVs coming out, people will one day want to create their own 3D home movies or photos for their new TV. Samsung was one company demonstrating a prototype 3D camera at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Samsung projected images from the camera in a roped-off darkened exhibit area so it was difficult to get good pictures of the camera itself. But a sign at the entrance shows what the camera looks like (on right). With two ‘eyes,’ the camera has a left and right lens so it takes two photos simultaneously and weaves them together to create a 3D image viewed best with 3D glasses.

The camera on display was a 12-megapixel camera with HDMI outputs. As with many new gadgets at CES, no price or launch date was available on this one. It appears to be a gadget for the further future.

Samsung isn’t the only one playing with 3D cameras for consumers. Fuji has the newish FinePix Real 3D for $600.

Spotted at the Sony Electronics booth at the Consumer Electronics Show: The Sony Ericcson Xperia Pureness mobile phone.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness cellphone

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness cellphoneThe keypad lights up with numbers upon touch and the see-through glass display activates as well. It may be a little hard for someone to see, but those folks probably won’t be interested in it. The tech behind the look is Edge-lighted LED display.

Other than its cool design, it seems to be your basic cellphone with talk, text and just something cool to play with.

Sony had a lot of other phones, not to mention TVs and other toys. There’s no launch date yet, but the phone’s price is out: $995.

I also took a quick video, which I posted on Youtube. Check it out HERE.

Sharp’s twist on TVs: A new color

January 7th, 2010, 11:15 am by

Sharp's QuadPixel TVsIf you didn’t think your color TV was colorful enough, Sharp Electronics Corp. says you’re right. It was missing a major color: Yellow.

Pretty much every TV relies on three colors — red, green and blue, or RGB. Heard of that? These are the three colors in the color spectrum that reproduce a billion other colors on a TV. But by adding yellow to the mix, Sharp TVs can produce 1 trillion colors.

Whether you’ve been missing yellow or not, Sharp says that conventional LCD TVs have had trouble producing the hue, especially the golden yellow color of brass instruments.

Sharp's QuadPixel TVsSharp’s QuadPixel technology did help Sharp stand out at the Consumer Electronics Show, where competitors were announcing all sorts of new 3D HDTVs (Sharp’s 3D TV is still a prototype). Here’s Sharp’s press release on the 4-color TV technology.

The new QuadPixel TVs will be available in the spring. Here are a few more pictures from the press conference. Click to enlarge: Read the rest of this entry »

Why is everyone in line for D-Link?

January 7th, 2010, 10:54 am by

Spotted at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show, Las Vegas: A line for D-Link Systems in the hallway of the south hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Fountain Valley company is usually out on the show floor with its home networking products. Still, people were lining up:

Free music too!

Much better than the usual plethora of free bags, pens, magnets and other doohickeys that probably got thrown out after the show anyway.
