Time Warner strikes deal with Food Network

January 27th, 2010, 3:38 pm by

Time Warner Cable signWhew! Time Warner Cable announced that it has signed a ‘multi-year’ deal to keep Food Network TV on its roster for paying customers.

It was reportedly a tough negotiation as the contract between the two companies had expired Dec. 31, 2009. No details of the new agreement were disclosed.

The deal also includes a new multi-year contract with Great American Country, a channel also owned by Scripps Networks Interactive.

At least Time Warner  subscribers didn’t have to go through the loss of any food shows as customers of Cablevision did when Scripps failed to reach an agreement with that East Coast cable provider before their contract expired. Cablevision customers spent 21 days without the Food channel.

Cox moving 100 channels to on-demand format

November 13th, 2009, 1:28 pm by

Cox CableBeginning Nov. 25, Cox Communications in Orange County will roll out a new technology that will change how viewers watch 100 channels. Most won’t notice a difference but a small number — less than 1 percent — won’t be able to see the channels at all. (Thanks to reader TiVoGirl for the tip.)

In a letter mailed to customers this week,  Cox said it is migrating to the Switched Digital Video platform, which is one way cable companies can offer customers more channels. This opens up space for Cox to offer more HD channels. I’ll get to those new channels in my next post. UPDATE: And here’s that post: “Cox adding 15 HD channels in December.”

Cox, like other cable providers, is operating at maximum channel capacity. It can only air a certain number of channels 24 hours a day. But some channels take up more room than others — one analog channel occupies the same space as about 12 to 15 digital channels. Switching those analog channels to digital is one way for cable companies to free up space. This is what Time Warner is doing (see story: Time Warner makes room for 100 HD channels, kicks out others“).

The other method is by moving to switched digital video, which converts channels to a type of on-demand-only service. Customers still use their remotes as normal, turning to the channel they want. The majority of customers won’t notice the change — only, I’m told, a slight delay when they turn to a switched channel. But customers who don’t have a set-top box and rely on CableCARDs won’t be able to access the channels. Alternatives for these users are below.

“Switched Digital will allow us to maximize our network capacity, enable increased HD channels and entertainment options in the future. For example, now we have over 400 HD programming options [hours] and we continue to launch more HD channels,” said Cox spokeswoman Lana Ong. (Corrected at 4:45 p.m. Ong says she meant to say 400 HD hours of programming is available.)

FiOS gives 4 more reasons for cable subscribers to be jealous

September 30th, 2009, 1:23 am by

Verizon FiOS signIf you’ve wondered what high-definition TV channels actually exist, look to Verizon FiOS, which became Orange County’s leader in HD channels this year.

The company announced it will add more HD channels on Thursday, Oct. 1. The new HD channels are AMC HD, on channel 731; WE TV (Women’s Entertainment), channel 649; IFC HD, channel 894; and Fuse HD on channel 716. That brings the Verizon’s total to 133 HD channels in Orange County (see my new chart “Verizon FiOS HD Channels).

Local cable customers, meanwhile, are lucky if they’re getting 60, which to the cable providers’ credit is at least 20 percent more than was offered last year. Cable companies are also trying out different technologies to make more channels available.

FiOS HD
1 A&E HD
2 ABC-KABC HD
3 ABC Family HD
4 ABC Live Well
5 Action Max HD
6 Action Max HD
7 Animal Planet HD
8 At Max HD
9 Big Ten Network HD

The big problem with FiOS TV service is that very few people can order the service. In Orange County, the number of FiOS-eligible cities hasn’t changed in months. Those cities with partial service are Brea, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, La Habra, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach,  Stanton, Westminster and certain unincorporated areas.

But if you can order service, the channels seem to keep coming.  (Any FiOS customers notice a price increase?) FiOS has added at least 20 HD channels since February. Also, cable TV companies are at or near their maximum capacity. Verizon is nowhere near hitting its limit.

Jon Davies, a FiOS spokesman explained to me (again) why this fiber-optic cable TV service has so much room. Essentially, Verizon has three streams to each house it serves: One delivers HD and standard-definition video, a second one delivers Internet and voice service, and the third is upstream link for users to, for example, upload videos online faster (at 20 Mbps). New HD channel dedicated to short films heading to AT&T U-verse

July 20th, 2009, 12:35 pm by

ShortsHD, a channel from the U.K.New high-definition TV channels are popping out of nowhere. Anyone heard of ShortsHD? Google can’t seem to find it. But AT&T’s TV service U-verse just added the channel to its high-definition roster, which is now up to 110 HD channels.

U-verse describes ShortsHD, on Channel 1789, as a showcase of “short movies in a range of genres, including comedy, action, horror, drama and more.” Sounds promising, eh?

But on AT&T U-verse message boards, there are mixed reviews:

Says one: “Love it when U-Verse adds channels to their line-up but this channel is an absolute joke!!!

And a counter: “Still think it’s important they are ADDING channels to that tier (better than taking away).

I did a bit of digging (thanks to AT&T’s media folks) and found out what exactly ShortsHD is all about. It’s distributed by Shorts International, a United Kingdom TV company. And yes, it’s mostly a collection of short films and movies. AT&T U-verse is the first U.S. provider to offer the channel. Read the rest of this entry »

Verizon FiOS adds new cars, pets, food and 3 more HD channels

May 11th, 2009, 8:15 am by

Verizon FiOS adds 6 HD channels from Entertainment Studios.According to my calculations, Verizon FiOS is already in the lead for actual HD channel offerings. Today, it says it added six more channels:

  1. Cars.TV - a network that showcases the collectors, designers, innovators and ultimate-car enthusiasts.
  2. Pets.TV - a network dedicated to pet lovers that offers pet news, pet care, pet health and pet lifestyles.
  3. Comedy.TV - features today’s funniest comedians, with a mix of live concert performances, talk and variety shows, sitcoms and movies.
  4. MyDestination.TV - offers the best in travel, featuring exciting, exotic must-see destinations around the world.
  5. ES.TV - dedicated to entertainment news, variety shows, celebrity profiles and today’s hottest superstars.
  6. Recipe.TV - features famous chefs, amazing recipes, wonderful food and delicious cuisine from around the world.

The channels are from Entertainment Studios, a newish network founded by Byron Allen, a comedian/entrepreneur who has hosted comedy specials, a music-video program, and a variety of other shows.

According to Entertainment Studio’s site, the company produces 16 television shows for local broadcast channels. The new HD channels claim to be full of original content, but if it’s just the 16 shows offered, then expect a lot of reruns.

No word when the channels will be heading to other paid-TV companies.

The MLS package is also available to DirecTV and Dish Network subscribers for $79.

Time Warner adds HD movie channel, expands HD tier 33%

April 28th, 2009, 12:01 am by

Time Warner CableTime Warner Cable added the MGM HD channel in all areas on Channel 422, as part of its sparsely populated HD Tier.

About time! The sad HD tier, until now, had a measly three channels and charged $5/month. Its only saving grace is that pretty much all of the other HD channels are included for free with digital TV service and an HD box. With four channels in the HD tier, that comes out to $1.25 each per month.

While it may seem odd to only have 3 or 4 channels in a $5 tier, other TV services are offering something similar. AT&T’s U-verse’s “HD Premium Tier” only has 4 channels for $5 extra per month, Cox’s “High-Definition Plus Tier” is $4.95 and has 3 channels, while DirecTV’s “HD Extra” pack includes six channels for $4.95/month.

Why? Not sure. I’ve never asked. But I have a theory. The channels in these special tiers are from HDNet and other channels that only broadcast in HD. They have no standard-definition counterpart. When a company like Time Warner negotiates with a TV channel on whether it will add it to the lineup, I’m sure it tries to include the network’s catalog of channels — be it high def or standard def.

The MGM HD addition brings Time Warner’s HD offering  to approximately 51 channels, if you include the HD tier (4 channels) and premium HD channels (4 channels).

And as a TV service, Time Warner is still playing major catch-up with the rest of the county’s offerings. Here are the latest numbers from the various TV services. I counted up the HD channels listed on the companies’ Web sites. Yes, some companies say they offer more, but if so, they certainly don’t publicize what channels those exactly are:

TV company HD channels
Verizon FiOS 115
AT&T U-verse 106
DirecTV 104
Dish Networks 88
Cox Cable 53
Time Warner 51
