Time Warner adds Christian channel

April 23rd, 2009, 2:53 pm by

Daystar Networks TVAnother new channel on its way for Time Warner Cable customers: The Daystar Television Network, available in areas where public station KOCE is, starts today on channel 166.

The Christian TV network, as some may remember, originally made the highest bid for the local KOCE station a few years ago. But proponents of the public channel fought to keep it with PBS. Court battles ensued, until the two sides settled out of court. KOCE continues to exist as a public channel, broadcasting out of Huntington Beach.

Besides Time Warner, the Daystar channel is available online plus on these local TV services:

  • Dish Network, Channel 263
  • DirectTV, Channel 369
  • AT&T U-verse, Channel 563
  • Verizon FiOS, Channel 293

8 more reasons to gush about FiOS TV

March 10th, 2009, 1:15 am by

People in Orange County who can order FiOS TV service from Verizon pretty much all love this alternative to cable TV.

A good reason: The company continues to add more channels.

The latest bunch actually is in the video-on-demand department, thanks to agreements with Turner Networks and Sony. FiOS boasts a library of more than 14,000 titles, of which 8,500 of those are free.

While the recent news — 8 more on-demand channels — caught my attention, it made me wonder how many on-demand channels did FiOS actually offer. More than 200, according to a list the company provided me.

Some channels I didn’t know existed: The Jewish Channel, Saavn Movies & Music (Bollywood), Film Fest Channel, My Home 2.0, Fox Reality and a bunch more. Need I name them all?

The most recent 8 channels are from Turner Networks channels, plus FiOS adds movies from Sony. New on-demand channels are:

  • Adult Swim
  • Boomerang
  • Cartoon Network
  • CNN
  • TBS
  • TNT
  • TruTV
  • Turner Classic Movies

Upcoming movies from Turner Networks include “Anaconda,” “The Da Vinci Code,” “Final Destination 3,” “The Firm,” “A Knight’s Tale,” “Roman Holiday” and “Striking Distance.”

Movies from Sony include ”Anaconda 3: Offspring,” “Hancock” and “Pineapple Express.” No mention if these would fall under the free or fee category.

And for all the folks still loyal to cable, Time Warner Cable offers the same channels on demand. Cox doesn’t appear to have the Turner channels as part of its online package, but I have not verified this. Of course, you could go to Hulu.com to watch most of the same stuff for free and without a digital cable subscription.

30 new HD channels for AT&T U-verse

October 27th, 2008, 7:00 am by

AT&T U-verseFor the handful of Orange County residents who can even order AT&T U-verse, good news: 30 more HD channels will launch on Nov. 3.

Most of the new channels are available for no additional charge. And it’s heavy on sports — lots of Fox Sports channels (10 total), and Comcast Sports (3). List is below the jump.

That brings AT&T U-verse’s number of HD channels to 75, which tops that of Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications locally.

While the HD service does cost an extra $10 per month, most of the new channels are free, like QVC and The Weather Channel.  U-verse is adding another HD plan for $5/month, which will include Universal HD, MGM HD and the Smithsonian Channel HD.

In addition to the new HD channels, U-verse is adding a few standard-definition channels, including The Outdoor Channel, NASA TV and WAPA America and V-me. Plus, lots of ethnic programming is coming Nov. 10.  See details below: Read the rest of this entry »

Cox Communications recently added five new HD channels to its line-up, bringing the HD-channel count for regular subscribers to 42 channels.

Customers with an “HD Plus” subscriptions now receive the 42 channels that basic subscribers get, as well as three extra channels: HD Movies, HD Net and HD Theater. Customers with a “Premium” subscriptions to HBO, Cinemax, Starz and Showtime, can now receive the HD versions of these channels without any additional charges.

Subscribers that have both the “HD Plus” and the “Premium” tiers will now receive a total of 49 HD channels.

“People are very excited about this,” said Orange County Communications Manager Ayn Craciun. “Even regular subscribers sometimes tell us ‘this is all we need!’”

Not all 42 channels are available to viewers in all areas of Orange County. The company is working on making all channels accessible to all subscribers. Take a look at the tentative schedule to find out when to expect them where you live.
