Help Cox Cable give $17,500 to the most deserving local charities

August 18th, 2009, 11:20 am by

Cox Cares, the community-grant-giving arm of Cox Communications, is offering $10k to local charties. As mentioned earlier, Cox Communications, Orange County’s main TV provider in the south, has $17,500 to give away to charity. Now, it’s time for the public to chime in on which organization is most worthy.

The Cox Cares program narrowed down a record 114 applications to 10 finalists. Last year, the program received 42 applications so obviously, non-profits are seeking out new funding. Cox has grants of $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000 available.

The 2009 finalists include: the American Diabetes AssociationArt & Creativity for Healing, the Assistance League of Capistrano Valley, the Blind Children’s Learning CenterFamily Assistance MinistriesFristersHuman Options, the Illumination FoundationMy HERO Project and Shanti Orange County.

While Cox does rely on a group of associates and local leaders to judge a charity’s impact on youth, seniors and education, this year it wants input from the community (that’s you, dear reader).

Vote at www.cox-cares.org/grants/finalists before Sept. 4. A detailed summary of each finalist’s purpose is posted on Cox’s site. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in mid-September.

Much of the money, says Cox, was donated by its 1,000 employees in Rancho Santa Margarita. The local office has donated $600,000 over the years to 95 local nonprofit organizations.

July 6th, 2009, 5:19 pm by

Cox Cares, the community-grant-giving arm of Cox Communications, is offering $10k to local charties.Interesting little contest from the local office of Cox Communications: The Rancho Santa Margarita company is giving away grants of $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000 to a deserving charity that gets the most public votes.

Through its Cox Cares charity program, the cable TV provider wants to reward local organizations who are doing something to make life better for its local customers and employees.

Charities that wish to be considered need to apply by midnight on Friday, July 10, 2009. Organizations need to be based in Orange County, North Camp Pendleton and Palos Verdes and can apply at www.cox-cares.org/grants. A tip: The committee will judge non-profits on ”the quality of the program and its impact on the areas of youth, education and seniors.”

Cox will then review applications and choose the finalists. And on August 14, Cox Cares will post the finalists online at www.cox-cares.org/grants and start tallying votes from the public on which organization is most deserving of a grant. The winners will be notified at an awards ceremony in September.

Much of the money, says Cox, was donated by its 1,000 employees in Rancho Santa Margarita. The local office has donated $600,000 over the years to 95 local nonprofit organizations.

24 O.C. AT&T stores help Eva Longoria and children with cancer

It’s always nice to see a big, national company doing something for the little guy. And AT&T, which gets a lot of coverage here on this blog, just donated some money to help children with cancer. So, I thought it’s only fair to mention some of the good stuff these companies are doing.

Approximately 130 stores in the Los Angeles area, including 24 in Orange County, participated in the 5-week event to raise money for PADRES  Contra El Cáncer, a non-profit organization helping Latino children with cancer. The local stores raised $200,000.

I’m sort of surprised the company even raised this much since the fundraiser relied on the good conscience of customers. It offered $100 cash back to any one who purchased its advanced TV service like U-verse – and then it encouraged those customers to donate a portion of the money to the charity.

On Saturday, the 5-week fundraiser culminated in a ceremony where Eva Longoria Parker, the organization’s national spokeswoman, accepted the money from AT&T.

Text a message to help feed America’s hungry

January 13th, 2009, 11:30 am by

AT&T customers can help fight childhood hunger by texting the word ”SHARE” to 20222. Each text message will donate $5 to Share Our Strength, a non-profit organization aimed at leaving no kid hungry.

In addition, AT&T will match each donation, up to $100,000, through March 1. Share Our Strength says that one in six children in America are at risk of not getting enough food every day. More details are available HERE.

The text-donation initiative is an effort between Share Our Strength and the Mobile Giving Foundation, a nonprofit wireless industry ogranization. AT&T said that its participation is in response to President-elect Obama’s call for action and a national day of service on January 19.

In addition, AT&T’s employees are holding food drives to benefit local food banks. In the Orange County and Los Angeles area, there are more than 10,000 AT&T employees. Food drives will take place in Anaheim and Los Angeles. In Orange County, proceeds will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Time Warner Cable ‘adopts’ O.C. families

December 24th, 2008, 4:35 pm by

I’ve been covering the good and the bad of Time Warner Cable pretty heavily in the past few months. While a lot of readers continue to be upset or frustrated with service and prices, it is nice to hear that the company is giving back to the community.

In Orange County, Time Warner employs 800 people. There are about 8,000 in the Southern California region. Through a program called “Hope for the Holidays,” Time Warner asked employees to help it “adopt” 31 families and shower them with Christmas gifts, meals and furniture. Gifts included games, sewing machines, telescopes, TVs, food and grocery cards.

Four families were from Orange County, including Stanton resident Rebecca and her mother, Cecelia. Rebecca got a bed and mattress and a bunch of gifts that are piled on the bed in the photo on right. Other families live in Placentia, Yorba Linda and Brea.

If you have other charitable news to share this Christmas, please leave a comment below. Happy Holidays!
