Will crazy colors spur interest in new netbooks?

August 19th, 2008, 7:31 pm by

Sylvania g Meso netbooksI can’t get enough of these netbooks! And now they come in four new colors: Onyx, Snow, Solar and Blossom.  (I guess that’s artsy speak for black, white, yellow and pink).  Sylvania unveiled its ‘MESO‘ line ” to match your attitude,” says the press release.  Sylvania G Meso netbooks

These smaller, thinner and cheaper computers are sprouting up everywhere whether or not people want them. I definitely like the idea of a lighter computer, but I’m a girl who likes performance so trading the extra pounds for a less powerful processor and minimal features hasn’t made me bite. Yet.

These new 2.2-pound MESOs have an 8.9-inch screen, an Intel Atom chip,  80 GB hard drive, 512 or 1 GB of memory, Wi-Fi, web cam, card reader, 3 USB ports and your choice of Linux-based Ubuntu Netbook Remix or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. Battery lasts 4 hours.

That’s not too bad, especially for the $399 price tag (or the price of a 16 GB iPhone and a year of its e-mail service, MobileMe). It’s on pre-order right now at Amazon, TigerDirect and others. See how it compares to the other netbooks on the market at “Mini PCs you may have missed.”

But I do wonder why Sylvania skipped blue and green. Could they not think of some creative twist on the name? Got any colorful suggestions?

Your cell phone will get a charge out of this bag

June 3rd, 2008, 2:32 pm by

Juice Bags ProFolioNot the prettiest way to tote a laptop, but the new Juice Bags ProFolio from Reware offers something most cases don’t: power.

Solar power, that is.

According to Reware, the bag “contains a technologically advanced thin-film solar panel composed of 52 micro solar cells. The panel immediately converts sunlight into usable energy to charge all 12volt electronics.”

While the bag can hold a 15-inch laptop, the solar charger is best suited to small gadgets, like cell phones, PDAs, iPods, and other portable devices.

Juice Bags solar panelReware makes all sorts of solar-powered bags. In addition, the solar panel is flexible and waterproof and can be removed from the bag. The bag is made from ballistic fabric, heavy-duty zippers and buckles, reinforced shoulder straps and is “stitched to military specifications.”

But of course, it needs sun to charge and, at $399, it’s not cheap. However, for a limited time, the bag is available for $299 at rewarestore.com. Juice Bags are also sold at Seeds of the Earth in Laguna Beach.

Own a Lamborghini for just $3,299

April 25th, 2008, 10:07 pm by

Eric Roberts holds his Lamborghini (laptop, that is…) ASUS launched a new laptop in style in — of all places — Santa Ana. Last night, hired celebs Luke Perry, Eric Roberts and Jaime Kennedy showed up to mingle with a bunch of Lamborghini lovers, ASUS’ Debby Lee told me.

But why Santa Ana? It’s home to Lamborghini Orange County, “the largest authorized Lamborghini dealer in the world,” according to the dealer’s site. John Gittelsohn, a Reg reporter who attended the event, said that 10 percent of the nation’s Lamborghini sales are done by this dealer.

Hot item of the night was the new ASUS-Lamborghini VX3 laptop, the $3,299 machine loaded with 4 GBs of memory, 320 GB hard drive and a 12.1-inch screen. Did I mention it shares the same paint and logo as the car? It also has a hand-made genuine leather palm rest and a crystal sapphire camera lens. Plus it includes a Lamborghini leather bag and mouse.

So, $3,300 is on the high end of computers but think of it this way: it’s a much cheaper way to express any midlife crises anxieties. (Only 12 inches? C’mon, where’s the 17-inch screen?)

By the way, haven’t heard much about ASUS? It’s an up and comer, most recently launching the Windows version of its $299 Eee PC. ASUS reminds me of another PC maker Acer, which thrilled gadget lovers a few years back when it launched its Ferrari-edition laptop. Now, the company owns Gateway.

Earth-friendly computer bags

April 21st, 2008, 3:00 am by

When it comes to green gadgets, one of the most prolific options out there is not so techie at all: computer bags. Earth friendly bags have become quite common in specialty stores but I believe we’re just on the verge of them hitting mainstream.

I’m reminded of the time when I started writing about ladies laptop bags a few years ago when locals Targus and Mobile Edge introduced their lines. Within months it seemed, I began spotting ladies bags at Target!

Last September, Targus introduced its EcoSmart line of bags. More are on the way, the company tells me. I haven’t been to Target lately to check the mainstream channel. This week, Targus is offering free shipping with any of its Grove bags, which includes a backpack (pictured on right), sling, messenger and regular briefcase styles. The bags are PVC-free, nickel-free and made from recycled materials.

HER Designs’ Leaf computer bag[Me thinking out loud: Why is it that Earth-friendly means drab colors? I wonder if hot-pink will ever be part of an eco-line up of computer bags?]Eco Geeko from HER Designs

What’s this? An eco-friendly pink computer bag? Actually, a laptop sleeve and the color is coral rose. The $30 Eco Geeko is made of 100 percent certified US-grown organic cotton canvas, and dyed using low-metal, low-sulfur, formaldehyde-free inks. It’s made by HER Designs, which has a whole line of bags that are made of “organic, sustainable and cruelty-free materials.” The $270 Leaf notebook bag (far right and seen in HER’s catalog) even looks like a leaf.

Vy and ElleMore fun recycled bags are over at Donkey, a New York company started by a couple of New Zealanders. They reuse vinyl billboard ads. The one-of-a-kind computer bags are $85. … So do designers from Vy and Elle, which has a vinyl-billboard computer backpack for $187.

Over at Keen, better known for shoes, its bags are the most colorful I’ve seen. A few blues, oranges and even purple! It calls the collection “Hybrid Transport” and the bags are made with recycled aluminum and rubber. The site even has a timeline of how aluminum and rubber are recycled to provide materials for the bags. The Burnside, below, is $95 at REI.

Keen’s earth-friendly laptop bags

Archetype bag from Tom BihnAnother piece of potential eco-chic tech I found was the Archetype bag (on right) from Mac-friendly designer Tom Bihn. It’s made from cork fabric. I’m not sure whether that means it contains cork or if it’s made from recyclable materials (I’m waiting to hear back from the company). Whatever the case, the $95 bag comes in assorted sizes — up to the 17-inch MacBook — and with its splash-proof zipper makes it the company’s most weather-resistant case.

Overland Equipment’s Seattle bag has several eco-features: non-toxic wax coated canvas , recycled rubber bottom, liner is made from recycled soda bottles, the buckle is made from recycled aluminum, and straps are recycled rubber. Room for a 15-inch laptop. Available at REI for $120.

And I knew that newspapers were good for something. The recycled newspaper computer bag from Hip and ZenHip and Zen sells laptop bags made from recycled newspapers (on right), as well as those plastic grocery bags. The description of the plastic-bag bag is more interesting: “The process is a renewing process which uses a fraction of the energy of recycling, where layers of different color plastic bags are placed on top of each other and fused together. The lining is made of canvas, and the trim of cargo tape. No dyes are used.” Price: $59.50. Here’s a link to the store’s recycled line.

Then there’s the … $118 movie-poster laptop bag, made from old vinyl movie posters, at re:modern … The chopstick bag, made from used wooden Chinese-takeout chopsticks, available at Eco Handbags in Canada … Bags made from recycled bicycle tires from FlatBag … And even more at Squidoo and Green Student U.

Western Digital goes pink!

October 24th, 2007, 12:01 am by

Western Digital blings up its MyBookI really liked Western Digital’s swanky gold MyBook hard drive (on right), which I spotted at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. But that was a one-time gadget that the Lake Forest company blinged up just for the show. Consumers were out of luck.

Western Digital adds colorThe company has since added more spark to its lineup, including sprucing up its portable hard-drive line with metallic-red and a vibrant-green hues. This is on top of the more ordinary black and white shades.

Now, I hear the company is adding a new color to its silver and black line of portable hard drives: PINK!

And here are the photos to prove it:

Western Digital’s pink Passport

The WD Passport is a 250 GB drive (nice!). The company is also donating a percentage of the net sales to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

It’s self-powered through USB so you don’t need to drag along an extra power cord. Prices weren’t available as of my writing, but the drive should be on sale starting this Sunday, Oct. 28, at shopwd.com and Best Buy stores. The black 250 GB Passport drives is $250.

LRG’s iPhone cases throw a party

October 17th, 2007, 3:49 am by

Remember the snazzy line of iPhone cases from Lake Forest designer L-R-G? They get their own Hollywood unveil tonight. Co-hosts include Monster Cable, 944 magazine and Luxirie (the ladies line by LRG).

Not sure if any celebs will show up — or even if the public is invited… But hey, sneaking in to ‘a night of fashion, entertainment & lifestyle” sounds like one of star-studded things to do on a Wednesday night. See the invite below for details:

The folks over at Computer Choppers just released photos and details of its latest customized creation – a gold and diamond Macbook Pro.Macbookgold1

The laptop was coated in 24-karat gold and to add a touch of glam, the Apple logo was encrusted with diamonds. Even the keyboard is paint-matched.

Macbookgold2The company writes that customizing laptops is not intended for mass production, but for each laptop to be unique. The company started in 2003 out of Oregon with the intent of offering “top notch customizing that exotic PC manufacturers can’t offer.”

Pink action: Incipio commits to the Cure

October 5th, 2007, 5:00 am by

Incipio’s pink casesIncipio’s pink cases Pink gadgets are more common these days and some of the credit should go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization, which raises money to seek a cure for breast cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the pink gadgets have been filling my inbox. But one message in particular, from Irvine’s Incipio Technologies, caught my eye.

Incipio’s pink casesLike many of us, Incipio’s president Andy Fathollahi has a personal story. A few years ago, he lost an aunt to cancer. He says:

She was very young and left behind two very young children. I have always wanted to help somehow.

Incipio’s pink campaign

This year during October, Incipio will donate 30 percent of sales of pink gadgets to the Orange County branch of the Komen foundation. This includes iPhone cases, Zune cases, T-Mobile Dash cases. Check it out.

Incipio’s pink casesThis isn’t going to be a huge thing for the Komen foundation but it’s something – and we hope to turn this into an annual event and hopefully we can really make a difference someday. What we are hoping to do is inspire other small businesses and let them know that any effort can make a huge impact.
