Cox says no to new NFL channel, but offers alternatives

September 12th, 2009, 8:45 am by

Cox has no plans to carry NFL RedZone.Football season officially starts Sunday and the NFL has created a new channel allowing TV providers to offer more games and coverage to viewers.

But neither cable company in Orange County has signed on to offer the NFL RedZone. Other TV providers — including AT&T U-verse, Verizon FIOS and Dish Network — are offering the channel.

For Cox Communications, the cable company has “no plans to carry the NFL RedZone channel,” said Lana Ong, a spokeswoman for the Rancho Santa Margarita company.

“However,” she added, “Cox knows how important football coverage is for our customers so this year, Cox will offer up to 375 football games including over 170 NFL games and more than 350 football games in HD at no additional cost for Cox customers.”

Cox offers digital cable customers access to the NFL Network, NFL Network HD and NFL On Demand including NFL Replay which offers extended highlights from every single NFL game played that week.

No response yet from Time Warner Cable, which isn’t offering RedZone or the NFL Network. But according to several reports, it looks like football fans won’t get the same coverage on Time Warner.

NFL gets AT&T U-verse love

September 11th, 2009, 11:31 am by

New NFL RedZone channel coming Sept. 13, 2009.AT&T U-verse is the third local TV provider to add the NFL RedZone channel, a premium sports channel featuring  in-depth football content.

The channel launches this Sunday (Sept. 13), the National Football League’s season opening. It counts Verizon FiOS, Dish Network and Comcast as customers. DirecTV customers already can subscribe to exclusive NFL coverage.

Apparently, Time Warner Cable is sitting out on this one, according to Sports Business Daily and commentator Phillip Swann over at TVPredictions.com. (I’m double checking with O.C.’s two cable providers. UPDATE, 9/12: Cox says no to new NFL channel, but offers alternatives)

The channel for AT&T U-verse customers will cost $5 a month and is part of the HD Premium Tier. It will broadcast on channel 1629.

By comparison, Verizon charges $49.99 for the entire season. Dish customers can order it for $5.99 per month as part of the multi-sport package.

Can’t get enough football on TV? Sprint offers live games on phone

September 4th, 2009, 1:06 pm by

Sprint offers NFL MobileIn this era of high-definition TV where HD sports broadcasts look fabulous, it seems strange to me that anyone would want to watch a game on their mobile phone.

But in case that’s you — perhaps you’re stuck buying guacamole at the grocery store or watching your kids play in the park on a Sunday afternoon — Sprint will again air live broadcasts on its Sprint Now Network of NFL Mobile Live. Sprint is apparently the only mobile phone service offering full broadcasts of the games.

Broadcasts include:

  •
    • Live radio broadcasts of every regular-season NFL game from the home team and road team’s local stations.
    • Live telecast of NLF Network, available for viewing after the event.
    •  Live telecast of all eight games televised by NLF Network, beginning Nov. 12 with the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.
    • Plus other features including text alerts, injury reports, track Fantasy Football teams and the ability to share video links with friends also on Sprint video phones.

This feature scored big with Sprint subscribers last year. It was one of the company’s most popular mobile applications, with more than 1 million downloads during the 2008 football season.

Sprint users can order NFL Mobile Live by texting NFL to 7777. The service is included with some of Sprint’s data plans, including the Sprint Everything data plans starting at $69.99. For other plans, NFL Mobile Live can be added by adding Sprint’s Data Pack service, which starts at $15 per month.

For non-Sprint users or Sprint users who don’t want to pay for full coverage, the NFL offers a highlight report free to any phone. NFL.com Wireless has news, scores and photos and the ability to manage NFL.com fantasy teams. Fans can sign up at www.nfl.com/wireless.

New NFL RedZone channel coming Sept. 13, 2009.UPDATE: Added pricing for Dish customers. See below.

So, the National Football League offers full coverage exclusively to DirecTV users. But other TV providers are taking advantage of a simplified option that launches in two weeks, the NFL RedZone.

Verizon today became the latest to offer FiOS TV subscribers the NFL RedZone, a premium sports channel that features some in-depth football content “that will bring fans every touchdown of every game on Sunday afternoons,” says the NFL.

Comcast and Dish Network have previously said they would offer the new channel, too.

The new channel officially launches Sept. 13. Read up on it at redzonetv.nfl.com.

Verizon plans to charge $49.99 for the entire season. Customers can order it two ways:  Turn to the channel and subscribe via the remote control, or call Verizon. No special deals or promotions are expected, so if you want it, pay up.

UPDATE: For Dish customers who want to view the NFL RedZone, Dish charges $5.99 per month as part of its multi-sport package, which can be added on to any Classic Silver 200 or above programming package, says the company. Customers can call 1-800-333-DISH to add the channel. Dish is also taking any customer question via Twitter at @dishnetwork.
