Stump the PC Club: Organize DVDs, media with free database software

August 12th, 2008, 3:09 am by

North Orange County Computer Club Q&AThe North Orange County Computer Club helps The Gadgetress tackle the multitude of readers cries for help. NOCCC group has experts in Windows, Word and all sorts of computer topics. The club, which meets monthly on various topics, has been in existence since 1976. Visit the club’s site at noccc.org.  To get answers delivered to your computer automatically, sign up for the e-mail update.

Question: I’m trying in find a small “free” database program that will allow me to catalog my DVDs and CDs. I’ve use Excel, however prefer an old fashion database, somewhat like Dbase II. I’m sure I’m not the only one out here that has this need. I’ve checked the web and most start with way more bells then I would need. Does Windows have something in their bundle software?

NOCCC: dBase II may be old, but it is hardly old fashion in terms of capability. It is a full blown programming language with a relational database engine at its heart. Major corporations have, and still could, use it to run every aspect of their business, albeit, without the Graphical User Interface we have become accustomed to. Foxpro did a great job of taking the dBase language into the GUI world until Microsoft bought and then discontinued it.

If you really want that class of database program, and want it to be “free,” Open Office is a good choice. Go to openoffice.org and download the Open Office suite of programs which includes the database program Base. Arguably, that suite of programs is equal to, and compatible with, the high-dollar version of Microsoft Office.

If you can be happy with a program that is dedicated to the task of cataloging DVDs and CDs, here are two programs that you can download. Both are free at tucows.com: Media Organizer 3.0.1.9 and DVD Profiler 2.2.0. ~ Jim Sanders, NOCCC president

Get your free hands-free headset before law starts July 1

June 23rd, 2008, 11:33 am by

FreeHeadset.org will ship you a headsets for $3.94Eight more days until California’s hands-free driving law goes into effect. If you’ve been too cheap to buy a headset, you have two options: Stop talking on your cell phone while driving or visit FreeHeadset.org and get one mailed to you for $3.94 to cover shipping.

Free headset for Samsung BlackJackThe site offers wired headsets for a ton of different cell phones, which is great because cell phones are so proprietary that there is no one-size-fits-all headset.  FreeHeadest also offers a Bluetooth headset from Motorola but that will cost you $27 (still, a pretty good deal for Bluetooth).

Matt MacAdams, who started the San Diego site in 2003, said he buys all the headsets directly from Motorola, Nokia and other cell phone companies. He buys in bulk, so he gets a major discount. By charging a little more in shipping — $3.94 per headset — the company is able to break even. Yes, wired headsets are that cheap.

Headsets are shipped first-class mail on the day of the order, unless there’s a sudden surge in orders. That’s because FreeHeadset is just MacAdams, whose day job is to write code for a “very large cell phone company.” Plus, he gets help from a few friends who volunteer their time. When the New York Times wrote about the company in 2004, they got so many orders, it took about two weeks to catch up. Customers should get their order within 2 to 5 days.

MacAdams considers FreeHeadset more of a hobby. He started it after witnessing a horrific traffic accident where a driver plowed through an intersection and  killed a mother. He later learned the driver was distracted with his cell phone and he couldn’t help but think that the death could have been avoided with a $3 headset. So, he started FreeHeadset.org. He thought about applying for non-profit status, but there was too much paperwork.

Expanding into a business he could make a living on would mean raising prices and that would ruin the whole free concept, he said.

“It gives you a good feeling to be non-profit,” he said.

Free software every day plus win a clone of your dog and HDTVs

Alt+Save: Deals and freebiesIf you don’t know about Giveaway of the Day, bookmark it. It’s a site that offers one new licensed software product every day. This isn’t a trial version. It’s the real deal.

What’s the catch? Don’t expect free tech support or free upgrades to future versions. It’s strictly for personal use and mostly available for Windows PCs only. And you can’t just save the program to install at a later date. Install it on the same day it’s free otherwise it won’t work. I can live with that.

Free software every dayThe site started in 2006 and surprisingly or not, it is still handing out freebies daily. If you want to dwell on the dark side of free, GotD was created to help software developers promote their products and get customer feedback. Companies want to know what you think. However, there’s no registration required to download so you’re not handing over any personal information, including an e-mail address. And the company still gets paid by GotD for the free licenses downloaded, although GotD doesn’t mention if it pays full price. It’s win-win, says GotD.

For consumers, the other nice thing about GotD is because it’s popular, there are a lot of users who actively comment. Comments will tip you off on whether the product works or what issues you may encounter. Friday’s giveaway, Xilisoft’s DVD Ripper Ultimate, has quite a few people mentioning installation problems. Others weren’t so impressed and even suggested a favorite alternative.

Either way, the site is a good spot to search and try new software. Keep it if you like. Delete it if you don’t. And for gamers, check out the Game Giveaway of the Day.

And for Mac users, GotD is considering offering Mac-related software someday. In the meantime, check out sites for discounted Mac software, such as MacZot.com, Softpedia.com and Mac Update Promo (mupromo.com).

DealNews.com also mentions several other stores trying to lure you in, including Sams Club, Staples, Wal-Mart and Sears.

And while you’re at it, enter eBillMe’s Shopping Confessions‘ monthly contest to win $1,000. Just submit a story about what you’re doing with your tax refund of stimulus check. Best video or written confession wins the cash.

Free and cheap 411 alternatives

May 29th, 2008, 4:56 pm by

Dialing 411 ain’t cheapDialing 411 isn’t cheap. Do you know how much we spend on them? (Answer after the ‘jump’). Thank goodness there are free alternatives. I tested four of them with this simple goal: Get the phone number for Starbucks on 17th Street in Santa Ana. Here are the results:

Jingle Networks (1-800-Free411): Not impressive. After a 10-second ad, the automated service didn’t recognize my query — Starbucks — and gave me a hardware store instead. Second attempt: It found Starbucks but when trying to narrow by street, it gave me four other Starbucks first. If you spend too much time waiting for the result, you’ll get another ad. Both times, I was informed that I had won a trip to magical Orlando.

TellMe texts the number to your phone

Goog-411 (1-800-GOOG-411): From Google, the free and ad-free service also will text the information to your phone. Automated service had trouble deciphering my speech. I said “Santa Ana” but it gave me “Anaheim.” Much, much faster than Free411.

Microsoft’s TellMe (1-800-555-TELL or 1-800-CALL-411): TellMe doesn’t listen very well. It could not understand my repeated attempts to say “17th Street.” I almost hung up. At some point I said, ‘I don’t know’ and it started listing Starbucks locations. Once I found what I wanted, it offered driving directions and the option to send the message as a text to a cell phone. If you like the service, TellMe also offers news, maps, directions, traffic and weather. Microsoft’s Live Search 411 uses TellMe’s technology.

AT&T 1-800-YELLOWPAGES (1-800-YELLOWPages): AT&T’s free 411 spent a mere 2-seconds mentioning the sponsor of the call. Perhaps I learned from earlier attempts but I enunciated clearly and loudly into the phone and it pulled up Starbucks with no problem. I also liked how it narrowed down results quickly, finding two Starbucks on 17th Street. According to the FAQ’s, not every caller has to listen to an ad. For those keeping track, this used to be 800-411Metro.

Amazingly, we spent around $5.8 billion on 411 calls last year — a number that comes from Saroja Girishankar, vice president of information services at market research firm The Pelorus Group in New Jersey. She tracks the directory-assistance industry for a living. There are reports in the $8 billion range, but Saroja feels that number likely includes more than basic directory assistance information.

“411 is a service that is very need based. When they want a number, they call right then. 411 is a brand that is so deeply etched in the brains of people that you can dial it in your sleep. You don’t think about it or think about the $1.25 fee (for wireless directory assistance calls),” she told me.

Out of curiosity, I decided to find out how much it costs to dial 411. Can you believe this:
