Vonage adds unlimited international plan for mobile phones

December 24th, 2009, 3:50 pm by

Vonage World MobileNoted: Vonage phone service, which isn’t just for the home anymore, introduced Vonage World Mobile, an unlimited international plan to users of its newish Vonage Mobile plan. Qualified devices include the iPhone, iPod Touch and BlackBerry.

The Internet phone company introduced the mobile phone service in October, which charged per call. The new unlimited mobile international plan to  60 countries is $24.99 per month. The mobile service uses Wi-Fi and cellular service (iPod Touches only use Wi-Fi) and relies on the customer’s cell phone number to make calls. Calls to U.S. numbers are free using Wi-Fi.

Not every international city is included — no Vietnam — and looks like calls to cell phones in Mexico aren’t part of the deal either. Here’s the complete list of countries: Read the rest of this entry »

Apple alert: Steve Jobs, cheaper iPods, nanos with cameras

September 9th, 2009, 12:06 pm by

Apple iPod nano now includes video cameraApple’s big “It’s Only Rock and Roll” music event this morning has resulted in some surprising news: iPod nanos now have built-in video cameras but new iPod Touches don’t. Steve Jobs is walking and talking. Apple also dropped the lowest price of an iPod shuffle to $55.

The new iPod nano, available immediately, is $149 for the 8GB model and $179 for the 16GB model. Comes in silver, black, purple, blue, green, orange and pink. A yellow and (PRODUCT) RED versions at Apple’s retail or online store.

The iPod Touch was rumored to get a built-in camera but it is MIA, sad news for the iPhoneBlog.com. However, the Touch price dropped to $199 for the 8 GB version, and the lineup got a new size: 64 GBs for $399. The 32GB is now $299.

As for Steve? Standing ovation, according to CNET.  Engadget notes, “Wow — people are psyched right now. He looks good, and he’s definitely soaking this in.” Gizmodo offers its readers a Jesus as Messiah photoshopped image and this sentiment: ‘ … Steve Jobs has reappeared in the It’s Only Rock and Roll event, like the rock star he always wanted to be. Hallelujah!” (For those who don’t know, Apple founder Steve Jobs recently had a liver transplant and has long battled pancreatic cancer.)

Lots of coverage everywhere online. But here’s a link to Apple’s press site with details on new products.

Verizon’s ‘iPhone’ has arrived!

June 5th, 2009, 6:27 am by

Verizon "iPhone"It’s sleek, it has apps and it’s running on “America’s largest and most reliable network.” Folks, I got my hands on what could be Verizon’s iPhone.

It comes in a larger size — up to 32 gigabytes!  It also includes a separate battery for the modem and it’s even slightly smaller than last year’s version, though it has a bulky 3G modem attached to the back.

Of course, the phone isn’t perfect. Sometimes the modem falls off so I suggest using either Krazy Glue or Velcro to bind the two pieces together. And you have to use one of those Voice-over-Internet Protocol services, like Skype, to make phone calls.

But with that special modem, the phone turns into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot so you and four friends can surf the Internet on laptops, iPod Touches or other Wi-Fi devices anywhere,  including traveling at 65 mph on the Interstate. In a test, I had three friends mooching off its wireless Internet!

Verizon "iPhone" - making a call Verizon "iPhone" - back Verizon "iPhone"

Okay, yes, I’m obviously joking. Verizon isn’t coming out with an iPhone, although there have been plenty of rumors this week, including a non-denial from Verizon officials. But with Sprint releasing the Palm Pre tomorrow and Apple potentially announcing an updated iPhone next week, I thought it would be fun to show you how to build your own iPhone on the Verizon network.

I’ve been playing with Verizon’s new MiFi 2200, a mobile hotspot mentioned on the blog earlier (see “Wi-Fi hot-spot on the go for $15/day“).  When I held it next to an iPod Touch, I realized, hey, I’m holding a Verizon iPhone! The above scenario is completely real, but, of course, this isn’t an iPhone. I’ll post my full MiFi review later (hopefully) today. UPDATE: The review IS IN!

Apple’s iTunes store adds Line Rider

September 18th, 2008, 1:03 pm by

As expected, Line Rider is now available for iPhone and iPod touch users. It’s $2.99 and beware, it contains “mild cartoon violence.” Heh.

The simple line-drawing game was developed by Newport Beach’s inXile Entertainment, which bought the rights to the web-based game from a Slovenian art-school student. The game, available free online, became a hit among players who captured their best animated drawings for YouTube.

A slicker version of the game was just released for the Nintendo DS and the PC. inXile is also producing a version for the Nintendo Wii, out next month.

New iPod nanos. Photo from Engadget.com

I’m following live reports from around the web of this morning’s Apple news conference. But I’m only highlighting the key points. The news so far:

  • Updated iPhone 2.1 firmware to fix all the bugs. Free and available Friday.
  • New  games: Spore, Real Soccer 09, Need For Speed: Undercover
  • Thinner iPod Touches too. The 8GB is $229, 16GB is $299 and 32GB is $399.
  • New in-ear phones for $79.
  • A new iPod nano — the skinniest yet! It has an accelerometer. Shake it and it shuffles the songs. (Does that mean I can’t run with it and listen to the full song?) It’s $149 for the 8GB model, $199 for the 16GB model and comes in 8 super-bright colors.
  • New iPods in 120 GB for $249 and 160 GBs (the 80 GB is being discontinued).
  • iTunes 8 announced.
  • HD TV shows  for $2.99. They’re watchable on a computer or Apple TV (which is a computer!).

Looks like that’s it folks. No more ‘One more thing…” Hmm. Stay tuned for more photos.

10 reasons why camping out for iPhone is better this year

July 10th, 2008, 9:45 am by

3giphoneigirl**Dude! If you’re reading this now, you’ve missed half the new stuff I’ve posted. Check out what’s happening right now in line at the Apple store in Irvine by going to ocregister.com/money **

From Thursday night:

Now back to the post…

New year, new iPhone. Same nerd and same plan to wait all night outside the Apple store at the Irvine Spectrum to be one of the first to get my Mac-fanatic hands on the 3G iPhone.

Yep, its iGirl and right now I’m waiting for MobileMe, the 2.0 iPhone operating software, the iPhone App store and the 3G iPhone. While I wait, here’s my top 10 list of reasons why my wait this year will be better than last year. Feel free to add your own ideas in comments.

10. I can browse through the more than 500 soon-to-be-available iPhone apps while waiting in line.

9. I’m a big nerd and everybody knows it. Last year, I was just a reporter who covered Irvine news laying my nerdy side out on the blog for everyone. By now, everyone knows I’m a tech geek and that’s ok.

8. I will be pain free. Last year, I put off having my wisdom teeth taken out to save up for the $600 iPhone on a reporter budget (I finally had them removed a few months later).

7. No embarrassing videos. Because the 3G iPhone release is less of a media event compared to last year, and because my buddy Matt Degen is now full-time behind a copy desk, he will not be videotaping my nerdy side like he did last year.

Apple stores open at 8 a.m. on July 11 for new iPhone6. Less waiting! The phone goes on sale in the morning at 8 a.m. instead of last year’s 6 p.m.

5. No funky tan lines. Having to wait all day in the sweltering heat last year, I ended up with bad tan lines and sun burns.

4. I get to mesh my love of Superman, journalism and electronics once again. My first iPhone is named Jimmy (for Jimmy Olson, the photographer sidekick to Lois Lane and Clark Kent). I have a new name for my 3G iPhone: Perry White, the editor of the Daily Planet newspaper. Register reporter and Superman fan, Eugene Fields, helped me come up with the new name. (Thanks for the help, Eugene.)

3. I can appreciate my current iPhone — and its longer battery life — a few hours more.

2. No sleeping outside on the ground this year. Last year, I waited 26 hours and even slept on the ground to get an iPhone. This year I plan to go out at some point during the night and a simple chair will be all I will need. No way will I wait longer for the 3G iPhone than I did for the first iPhone.

1. I’ll have my current iPhone to keep me company. Last year, I sat in line without Internet, videos, e-mail, music or other fun apps as I only had a pink Motorola Razr. And if by some horrific chance the Apple store should run out of 16GB iPhones before I can buy one, I’ll still have my old iPhone plus the new 2.0 operating system and new iPhone apps to play with all day — writing reviews for all of you!

I head to the store tonight. Feel free to join me in line. Or just stick with me all day and night as I blog about anticipation for the iPhone 2.0.
