When 750 people show up for 60 jobs…

July 1st, 2009, 5:45 pm by

750 show up for 60 jobs at Cox's July job fair.Since I mentioned that Cox Cable was hosting a job fair over the weekend on this blog, I wanted to tell  readers that I just wrote the update for our Handling Hard Times blog. Some 750 showed up! For 60 jobs! Read the update, “750 people show up for 60 Cox jobs.”

Interestingly, I just checked Twitter and couldn’t find any of those 750 people tweeting about waiting in line for an interview. One guy did comment on this blog that he was there: “Was a LOT of people there. They updated the internal site showing all the listings last night / this AM. There were some sales spots and some in customer retention.”

I also noticed that Cox’s career page still has a few O.C. openings on its career site, with no mention wehther they’ve been filled. Likely, Cox is still browsing through 750 resumes. Some jobs advertised in its site (which could be the same ones from last week):

  • Sales Solution Store Concierge, part-time, 30 hours/week, $12.69/hour
  • Sales Solutions Specialist, part-time, 30 hours/week, $13.85/hour plus commissions
  • Internet Manager in charge of product management, development and strategy. No salary posted.

Anywho…

Need a job? Cox Cable hopes to fill 60 openings

June 25th, 2009, 12:05 am by

Cox CommunicationsShrinking economy? Not for one major cable TV company in Orange County. Cox Communications appears to be thriving. On Saturday, it will host a job fair in hopes of filling around 60 openings, said Lana Ong, a company spokesperson.

At least 20 positions are in sales, with salary ranges between $50,000 to $70,000, she said.

Cox was named one of Orange County’s best places to work for, based on a survey of employees. Cox also offers a nice set of employee perks, according to interview Register reporter Mark Eades had last fall with Duffy Leone, vice president and general manager of Cox Communications for Orange County.

Perks include free Starbucks coffee, a jeans-and-boot allowance for technicians, trans-fat free cafeteria food, Yoga classes and free flu shots. Read more about life at Cox at “Cox one of best places to work in Orange County.”

(Interestingly, this is the second telecom company that ranked high in the OC Register’s ‘best work places’ survey and is actively hiring. Verizon Wireless, another winner, recently filled 170 jobs at its Irvine office. As always, Irvine’s Blizzard Entertainment, another winner, is always hiring.)

Cox is hosting the job fair at its Rancho Santa Margarita headquarters on Saturday. Details below:

  • When: Saturday, June 27, 2009

HDTV seller Vizio adds jobs, expands customer service

May 14th, 2009, 11:52 am by

Vizio Inc., TV seller based in Irvine, CA.Slow economy? Bah! Vizio, the Irvine firm named the nation’s top seller of LCD TVs this month, continues to expand. The HDTV seller opened a sales and marketing center in North Sioux City, South Dakota, today.

The call center is dedicated to customer service and direct sales and will initially employ 25 people, which includes five managers. Staff is expected to ramp up to 45 by the end of the year.

Coincidentally, or not, many of the new workers are former Gateway computer employees. In a former life, Vizio founder William Wang convinced Gateway to start the affordable plasma TV revolution. Gateway, which was once headquartered in Irvine, was acquired by Acer Inc. two years ago. It still has some operations in South Dakota. That said, former Gateway CEO Ted Waitt was among the folks present for today’s ribbon cutting.

70 more job openings at Verizon Wireless’ Irvine office

May 7th, 2009, 12:01 am by

Verizon WirelessThe Irvine office of Verizon Wireless is beefing up its on-site customer service center and has 70 job openings. This is in addition to the 100 openings from early April, which, by the way, had an “overwhelming number of applicants,” said spokesman Ken Muche.

These, again, are customer service jobs. Verizon is looking for the type of person who can “listen and truly hear what’s being said” and “a certified problem solver,” according to the job description.

Amen! We need more of these types of customer service reps, especially in the telecom industry. While the company received stellar customer-service reviews from consumer-ranker J.D. Power, I still get occasional complaints about Verizon (and sorry folks, I can’t always help with that.)

“The 70 incremental jobs is to help us grow to meet our customers’ needs,” Muche said.

Much like the previous jobs, all Verizon employees get health care coverage from day one, a 401k program that matches 6 percent of salary, annual bonuses, profit sharing, a $20 maternity care program that covers nearly everything, and tuition reimbursement. There’s an adoption assistance program, temporary child or elder care, an on-site health club and diet-friendly lunches at its on-site cafeteria. Also, if you’re bilingual, you can earn an extra $1,500. Pay starts at $14.90 an hour.

And because Verizon initially gave me the wrong application info last time, causing readers to go berserk, Muche has listed the steps in applying:

  1. Find your way to www.VerizonWireless.com/careers
  2. Click “Search Careers”
  3.  Select Location “CA-Irvine” and Job Family “Customer Service”
  4.  Click on the “Customer Service Rep”
  5. “Apply Now”
  6. “Register Now”
  7.  Create a user name and password
  8. Create a user name and password, then complete an application and submit. An e-mail confirmation will be sent if submitted successfully.

Look for Job ID 233899.

Need a job? Verizon’s Irvine office has 100

April 3rd, 2009, 12:01 am by

**UPDATE, 11:11 a.m.**: Verizon Wireless clarifies HOW prospective job hunters can apply for jobs. The link the company originally provided was incorrect. And no, you don’t have to speak Spanish to get the job. See below for updated information…

Good news for Verizon Wireless customers and local job hunters.

Verizon Wireless needs to fill 100 full-time jobs at its Irvine call center for shifts between 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Pay starts at $14.90 an hour.

I guess there are two interpretations of this: Either Verizon is getting an earful from customers for awful service (unlikely) or it’s doing pretty well as a business and needs more customer service folks to support its growing customer base (more likely).

Either way, this is good news for Verizon customers because it means more people are available around the clock to offer support.

For the job hunter, the better news is that Verizon is apparently a great place to work. It was rated as one of the O.C. Register’s top places to work last year. Plus, Verizon has major benefits that are missing from most companies. Remember February’s “Tanking economy? Ha! Verizon employees get bonuses” story? Most employees received a 9 percent to 10 percent bonus last year.

Ken Muche, the Verizon spokesman who told me of the openings, also pointed out other benefits of working at Verizon: health care coverage from day one, a 401k program that matches 6 percent of salary, annual bonuses, profit sharing, a $20 maternity care program that covers nearly everything, and tuition reimbursement. There’s an adoption assistance program, temporary child or elder care, an on-site health club and diet-friendly lunches at its on-site cafeteria. Also, if you’re bilingual, you can earn an extra $1,500.

At a time when companies are cutting jobs and trimming benefits (hey — I’m about to go on a company-mandated furlough next week), it’s nice to hear that some companies still appreciate their employees.

Interested applicants can apply online at www.verizon.com/telecomjobs.

**UPDATE** Verizon Wireless provided the wrong link. The correct site is www.vzwcareers.com.

On this page, users can select the location (Irvine) and type (Customer Service) to find the customer service openings, which is Job ID 231059

Blizzard still looking for mobile developer

November 27th, 2007, 11:31 am by

Blizzard

Blizzard Entertainment in Irvine looks to expand its staff and continues its search for someone to bring its content to mobile devices.

That’s the jest of six job positions listed yesterday on the tech job Web site Dice.com. The jobs listed: CORE senior programmer, CRM software engineer, web systems administrator, web software engineer, storage area network administrator and lead mobile software engineer.

Blizzplanet reported earlier this year when the first mobile gaming positions were listed, but it looks like Blizzard is still looking to fill at least one of those spots.

That mobile engineer position wants someone to “lead the effort to bring Blizzard dynamic content to the mobile space.” Mobile candidates must have 3-5 years of programming experience so they can lead “a group of programmers in bringing Blizzard-IP-related functions to the mobile space.”

A senior mobile UI designer position still listed on Blizzard’s site, is intended for someone who has the capacity to “create and direct others to create clean designs that balance the Blizzard art style with the specific needs of the mobile audience.”

And if you can’t wait for a mobile Blizzard experience, check out this cell phone that is reported to be able to play World of Warcraft.
