AT&T improves reception in Cypress and Laguna Niguel

December 8th, 2009, 5:46 pm by

AT&T WirelessIt’s time for the monthly cell-phone reception update from AT&T. This month, the lucky winners are the cities of Cypress and Laguna Niguel. Both cities received a new 3G cell site, offering improved reception for AT&T mobile subscribers.

To collect the prize, city residents or anyone passing through, should notice better reception when near these intersections:

  • Lincoln Avenue and Valley View Street  in Cypress
  • Beacon Hill Way and Niguel Road in Laguna Niguel

Both are 3G cell sites, which means faster downloads and Web browsing.

AT&T even has this message for Orange County customers:

“We have a long history of investing in our network throughout Orange County to improve the quality of service we provide to our customers,” said Richard Porras, AT&T External Affairs, Orange County, in a press release. “Our customers will experience enhanced wireless coverage and an improved user experience as a direct result of the activation of this new cell site.”

Outside of Orange County, AT&T added nine new cell sites in the greater Los Angeles area. The additions are part of the 320 site upgrades to 3G plus 200 brand new cell sites AT&T is adding in California this year.

Where is AT&T's U-verse service?

Readers, I’m heading to my second day of jury duty so posts will be on hold. But here’s something for Orange County readers who are hoping to get AT&T’s alternative TV service, U-verse, in their city.

To supplement an ongoing series of updates as to what happened to the AT&T U-verse rollout in Orange County, the company gave me this updated list of cities where it is building U-verse.

Keep in mind, service may not be available in all the cities yet, but AT&T is working on building the service there.

Is your city listed? Or is it listed but you still can’t order TV service? Comment below or send me an e-mail and I will try to verify. If you have more information yourself, please share!

O.C. wants to know: When is FiOS coming to my city?

December 5th, 2008, 5:06 pm by

Verizon FiOSOrange County residents were some of the first to get Verizon’s fast FiOS Internet and TV service that is on par with cable companies. But still, I hear, “When is FiOS coming to my city?”

Time for an update. I asked Verizon FiOS for detailed launch by city. Of course, they didn’t give that to me. Too many unknowns (city permits, construction schedules), they said, not to mention that they dont’ want their competition to know.

But here’s what they could tell me:

Right now, FiOS is available in parts of Huntington Beach, Garden Grove, Westminister, Stanton, Fountain Valley and some unincorporated areas. In the next month, the first Seal Beach residents will be able to order FiOS.

Earlier this year, Verizon announced a long list of cities that it was given the go-ahead to launch FiOS. In Orange County, those cities include Brea, Dana Point, La Habra, Laguna Beach and Laguna Niguel. A complete list of Southern California cities is available HERE.

Where in the world is AT&T’s U-verse?

May 20th, 2008, 2:32 pm by

Someone keeps asking about AT&T’s U-verse TV service. In OC, it celebrates its one-year anniversary today.

The big fuss about this service is that it’s TV from the phone company. Verizon also offers TV service, called FiOS TV.

For OC, U-verse is now available in these cities, or parts thereof: Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Irvine, La Habra, Laguna Niguel, Orange, Placentia, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Ana, Tustin, Westminster and Yorba Linda.

That compares to the handful of cities that could subscribe to U-verse last year: Anaheim, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Laguna Niguel, Orange County, Santa Ana and Tustin.

AT&T won’t divulge future spots in Orange County (“Our competitors would lower their prices in preparation,” said a spokeswoman), but it does indeed look like service is expanding.

If you’re wondering why U-verse isn’t in Huntington Beach or other OC spots, the company focuses on its own telephone territory first. There’s still hope for non AT&T customers but U-verse could be a long ways away.

For those outside of OC, other areas with U-verse include:

  • California: San Francisco/Oakland, San Jose/Santa Clara,Riverside
  • Fairfield County, Conn.
  • Chicago
  • Indianapolis
  • St. Louis
  • Kansas City, Kansas
  • Detroit
  • Cleveland
  • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  • Texas: Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin

As for Verizon’s FiOS TV, no new cities since last year, according to the company. FiOS is hit and miss in these OC cities: Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Westminster, Garden Grove, Stanton, and certain unincorporated areas.
