Time Warner adds baseball channel free for 1 week, $179 for season

April 6th, 2010, 10:05 am by

Is the batter up? Who’s on first? Customers of Time Warner Cable and other paid-TV providers can find out for free this week as MLB Extra Innings channel offers a free preview through April 11.

Time Warner is the only one with an official announcement on the freebie. The baseball package, which will broadcast “well over 2,000 out-of market baseball games” this year is $179 for the whole season from Time Warner if you order by April 11. After that, it goes up to $199.

Some special features for this season include a way to watch the same game broadcast from the home team and the visiting team. You choose. Also, there will be a multi-screen mosaic so viewers can watch multiple games in the same TV frame.

In Orange County, Cox Communications also offers the MLB package. Consumers can check with their local TV service to see if the MLB free preview is available. More details at www.getbaseball.com or by calling 1-888-SPORTS-iN.

HD channels from Verizon FiOS.

Cox Communications just told me that Orange County customers will be getting 15 new HD channels by Dec. 15. Two others were added this week.

The Rancho Santa Margarita cable provider can do this because it is shifting some non-HD channels to the new technology and freeing up space. For more on how this technology works and why certain customers won’t be able to access the affected 100 channels, read the earlier story “Cox moving 100 channels to on-demand format.

Cox is set to end 2009 with 82 HD channels, ahead of Time Warner Cable, with 75, but behind local leader Verizon FiOS, which has 133. See the full list of Cox HD channels HERE.

Spreading the word: Roku added two more devices today to stream Netflix movies, Amazon Video on Demand and MLB.TV and other content to your TV.

The Roku SD player starts at $79. The Roku HD-XR, $129, adds Wi-Fi’s 802.11n technology plus a USB port for future use.

These join Roku’s existing $99 HD player, which came out in May 2008. All have Wi-Fi. You can compare the three products HERE on Roku’s site.

Batter up! Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Cox debut MLB channel

January 1st, 2009, 8:48 am by

For serious baseball fans, the new Major League Baseball Network debuts today at 3 p.m.

In Orange County, the new channel will be available on channel 276 for Time Warner Cable customers and 213 on DirecTV — and Cox Communications, on channel 119 and 340 (thanks Arte!).  The new network’s website offers quick links for AT&T U-verse and Dish Network customers to request the MLB Network from their TV company.

The new channel begins airing at 3 p.m. today with original shows and then at 4 p.m., a rebroadcast of Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, where Don Larsen threw the only no-hitter in postseason history.  Interspersed throughout the game, announcer Bob Costas will provide commentary throughout the game with Larsen and Yogi Berra.

The MLB Channel will offer live and archived game coverage and other baseball and softball-related programming. For the countdown, MLB is “live blogging” down the hours at tinyurl.com/9yk4pl.  A schedule of the first evening’s programs is available HERE.

For Time Warner Customers, the channel is included free for those who have the ‘Variety Tier’ of digital TV service.
