Epix HD, a new movie channelNoted: Cox Communications is the latest to sign up to get EPIX, a newish HD network featuring movies from Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer STudios and Lionsgate. Cox plans to offer the channel as a movie tier to customers nationwide beginning in April 2010.

Cox customers in Orange County should get the channel at the same time as the rest of the nation, according to the local Cox folks.

A few EPIX movies coming in April include Star Trek, GI Joe, Paranormal Activity and the Tyler Perry film franchise.

EPIX launched in 2008 and signed up its first customer, Verizon FiOS, in July 2009. Showtime wanted to cut the fees it paid to broadcast their movies.

Terms of the Cox deal were not disclosed.

Africa Channel coming to Time Warner

December 9th, 2009, 5:29 pm by

The Africa ChannelTime Warner Cable is adding the Africa Channel to its lineup in Orange County and Southern California. It will be on Channel 176 as part of the Choice Tier, which includes the National Geographic channel.

The Africa Channel is part of a new TV network with featured shows on, obviously, Africa.

According to a Christian Science Monitor article, the channel is independent and privately funded. “NBA star Dikembe Mutombo, who comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, wrote the startup’s first check. Now it relies on funding from groups such as Williams Holdings, LLC, a privately held investment firm,” says the report.

The report goes on to mention some of the difficulty a new channel has in today’s cable market: Cable companies are reluctant to add channels because bandwidth is so critical. Plus, most cable viewers stick to the same dozen channels, or fewer.

The channel offers news, sports, and lifestyle shows about Africa. More details at its site: theafricachannel.com.

Time Warner makes room for 100 HD channels, kicks out others

November 10th, 2009, 4:53 pm by

Time Warner Cable photo, courtesy of AP.On Dec. 8,  Time Warner Cable will move eight channels to digital for those in Orange County and Los Angeles. That means customers who get cable TV service by plugging a TV into the wall or using an older analog cable box will need to upgrade to digital equipment.

The change will make room for several new HD channels, including AMC HD, The Weather Channel HD, History International HD, ESPNU HD and “many more,” according to a letter sent to subscribers this week. Next month starts the company’s kickoff to reach 100 HD channels.

The analog channels that are moving – KWHY, Shop NBC, AMC, The Weather Channel, ABC Family, Oxygen, TruTV and Style — will all still be exist on the same channel number, but only in a digital format. If you don’t have a digital set-top box, you won’t be able to access them.

For customers who don’t have a digital box, Time Warner will let you borrow one for free for one year. This offer only applies to households without a digital box. If you already lease digital boxes but have an extra TV plugged into the wall, you’ll need to pay for a digital box to get all the channels on that TV.

“With more digital carriage space available, we will be able to free up bandwidth for future uses, such as launching new channels, providing more services and offering even more HD, not to mention, this will enhance picture quality and sound on existing services,” said Darryl Ryan, Time Warner Cable’s local director of media relations.

Verizon FiOS to get HBO HD, Cinemax HD on demand

September 9th, 2009, 5:17 pm by

Verizon FiOSNoted: Verizon FiOS is already the leader in high-definition channels, and today it added a few more.

But it’s not completely new content. Rather, it’s more on-demand channels. HBO HD and Cinemax HD will offer select movies and shows on demand to customers who already subscribe to the premium channels. The service starts this fall.

For movie-loving FiOS TV customers, Verizon is beefing up its FiOS Movie package with on-demand content from The Movie Channel and Starz.

Premium channels are not part of any FiOS starter plans. They cost extra and are not cheap, anywhere from $11.99 to $15.99 each per month. The bundled price for all three — HBO, Cinemax and Movie channels — is $35. By comparison, Time Warner Cable charges $15/month for one premium, or $37 for 3.

A current lineup of Verizon FiOS channels for Southern California is available HERE.

Time Warner Cable adds 4 HD channels but cuts two others

May 18th, 2009, 4:58 pm by

Time Warner CableJust when Time Warner Cable was on a roll with new HD channels, it confirmed today that the two-channel HDNet will exit quietly later this month.

HDNet, the high-definition network from Mark Cuban (of Broadcast.com, Dallas Mavericks fame), was one of the first HD-only (actually, probably the first) networks that offered movies and canceled TV shows, like “Jag” and “Arrested Development” in pure HD.

“After many discussions and a lot of hard work, we have not been able to reach terms. We were therefore required to provide legal notice that we’d have to drop HDNet and HDNet Movies,” said Darryl Ryan, spokesman for Time Warner’s Southern California office.

However, Ryan has a peace offering for customers in Southern California. The service will add four new HD channels by May 27. Those are:
  1. FOX Sports West HD, channel 463, will include Los Angeles Lakers, Angels and Los Angeles Kings games, plus PAC-10 football and basketball games.
  2. FSN Prime Ticket HD, on Channel 464, will include Los Angeles Clippers, Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Dodgers games, plus UCLA and USC sporting events.
  3. Crime & Investigation HD, Channel 420, is A&E Television’s channel dedicated crime and mystery. Programs will include “Headline Crime,” “The Big House,” and “With Malice.”
  4. KPXN (ION) HD, Channel 410, will feature older TV shows including “NCIS,” “Boston Legal,” “ER,” M*A*S*H” and “The Drew Carey Show.”

The sports channels and KPXN will be included with all basic cable subscribers plans beginning May 27. The Crime & Investigation channel will be added to the HD tier.

With the changes, this leaves the cable company’s HD tier, which is $5/month, with just two channels, Universal HD and the recently added MGM HD. But the tier goes back up to four channels after adding in the new ‘Crime’ channel plus the Smithsonian HD, which joins the HD tier next month, as previously reported.
