U-verse getting its MTV HD! (and 5 more HD channels)

May 15th, 2009, 8:14 am by

AT&T U-verseNew high-definition channels keep popping up on various TV services. Today, it’s AT&T U-verse’s turn. New channels are:

  1. MTV HD
  2. VH1 HD
  3. CMT HD
  4. Nickelodeon HD
  5. Comedy Central HD
  6. Spike HD

This is included as part of a customer’s HD service subscription, which is either an extra $10 with most packages or included with the U450 plan.

U-verse TV, a growing alternative to cable TV, has been available in Orange County for two years in certain parts of some cities. To date, those cities are Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Irvine, La Habra, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Newport Beach, Orange, Placentia, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Ana, Stanton, Tustin, Villa Park, Westminster and Yorba Linda.

I can’t keep up myself with the number of HD channels the various services have. But according to my count so far, Verizon FiOS is still in the lead with 121 HD channels. There is a report that Dish Network is now at 140 HD channels, but I have been unable to verify every channel (I have Dish at 93). Time Warner Cable, while making progress, continues to lag behind the others with 51 HD channels, a number that is different depending on which O.C. city you live in.

30 new HD channels for AT&T U-verse

October 27th, 2008, 7:00 am by

AT&T U-verseFor the handful of Orange County residents who can even order AT&T U-verse, good news: 30 more HD channels will launch on Nov. 3.

Most of the new channels are available for no additional charge. And it’s heavy on sports — lots of Fox Sports channels (10 total), and Comcast Sports (3). List is below the jump.

That brings AT&T U-verse’s number of HD channels to 75, which tops that of Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications locally.

While the HD service does cost an extra $10 per month, most of the new channels are free, like QVC and The Weather Channel.  U-verse is adding another HD plan for $5/month, which will include Universal HD, MGM HD and the Smithsonian Channel HD.

In addition to the new HD channels, U-verse is adding a few standard-definition channels, including The Outdoor Channel, NASA TV and WAPA America and V-me. Plus, lots of ethnic programming is coming Nov. 10.  See details below: Read the rest of this entry »

Cox adds two Hindi-language channels in O.C.

October 8th, 2008, 12:10 am by

Cox Communications, the cable TV provider for a good chunk of Orange County, added two Indian-language channels for local viewers. The channels, STAR India Plus and Sony Entertainment Television Asia (or SET Asia), are now available on channels 411 and 412, respectively.

Both can be ordered individually or as part of a package. A la carte prices for international channels are available HERE (the a la carte price for SET Asia is $14.95/month, while STAR India Plus appears to be $11.95).

Until Nov. 30, Cox customers in Orange County can get an international channel for free for one month. More about the channel and free offer in the press release, pasted below the jump. See more about Cox in the “Guide to TV services in O.C.” Read the rest of this entry »
