Wii Fit selling out fast

May 21st, 2008, 10:48 am by

See updates below…

If you didn’t line up this morning for a Nintendo Wii Fit, you may be out of luck. Many local stores contacted reported they were out of stock of the $89.99 gaming accessory minutes after the store opened.

OCRegister reporter Niyaz Pirani told me he showed up minutes before the Aliso Mission Viejo Target opened at 8 a.m. He was the 20th person in line and the new game accessory sold out by 8:01. There were 44 in stock. Read his tale HERE.

Gadgetress contributor Sonya ‘iGirl’ Smith also found herself in line at the Target in Cerritos at 7:40 a.m. The store had 40 in stock and she left with one as well.

At Best Buy, early reports say that Wii Fits are likely sold out through the chain, according to a spokesperson. She didn’t know when more would be in but offered some advice: “Customers just keep checking back and sometimes they can befriend the game people because then they’re on a first name basis,” she said.

Online, it’s a sad story: Wal-Mart is out of stock. Amazon is out (it sold 2.5 Wii’s a minute in pre-orders!) and offers Wii Fits only from its market sellers, starting at $140. Same with Buy.com, which was offering one from a retail partner for $170.

However… there are some still available!!

How to find the Wii Fit for the right price

May 19th, 2008, 1:05 pm by

Wii FitNintendo’s Wii Fit balance board for its super-popular Wii game console goes on sale today. But only at the Nintendo World Store in New York.

Nintendo has already sold 2 million Fits in Japan so that’s why the $89.99 game accessory is popping up on eBay (up to $360) and Amazon sellers for outrageous prices ($180 plus $3.99 shipping at one Amazon store).

For us sorry gamers who didn’t pre-order when we had the chance, the actual Wii FitWii Fit goes on sale Wednesday at many local stores without the unnecessary markup. You’ll just have to line up with everyone else.

However, Wal-Mart is still taking pre-orders! And at a 25-cents off, at $89.74. Bonus: It’s offering a $10 Walmart.com gift card for all Wii Fit pre-orders.

I first saw this unique gadget for the Wii game console at the E3 game convention last year. This flat device looks like a white scale because it essentially is — it calculates your weight (oh what fun! It senses movement so if you sway your hips back and forth, you’ll be perfect for the virtual hula-hoop game.

Nintendo’s marketing campaign is targeting fitness fans (see Target’s ad on right) who want to use the Fit for yoga, bumping a soccer ball with your head and other exercises.

Here’s a list of stores with Wii Fits on sale Wednesday, plus other pertinent information:

Activision’s CEO named #2 gaming person of year

December 18th, 2007, 5:00 am by

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick (who is now head of Activision-Blizzard) has been named the #2 gaming Person of the Year by Game Daily. But, the No. 1 spot was handed to a Wii man, Nintendo’s President Reggie Fils-Aime.PersonofYear

The site notes that Bobby Kotick has led the company to develop popular games such as Guitar Hero, became the first independent publisher to overtake the leading third-party Electronic Arts in sales, reach the highest net revenues in the company’s history, acquire racing game developer Bizarre Creations and made the Activision-Blizzard deal, a “strategic move … that the industry will still be talking about for years to come.”

The site says the “mega merger” propelled Activision from a small presence to “a legitimate #1″ gaming company with the help of Irvine’s Blizzard.

Where to find a Wii in O.C.

November 21st, 2007, 11:00 am by

Nintendo WiiFinding one’s inner Chi is easier than finding a Wii these days.

The Nintendo Wii gaming console debuted last Nov. 19 and is swiftly becoming the most difficult to find holiday gift this year. Engadget posted that during a recent interview, Nintendo of America’s marketing chief George Harrison said they are “still expecting some shortages in December,” but noted that the Big N wouldn’t be toning down its marketing efforts. Harrison also said that Nintendo continues to produce some 1.8 million Wiis every month.

And here to help parents across the county find the game console for their Wii little ones are some sites tracking Wii availability (click the titles to visit the Web sites):

  • Wii availability blog: By Jason Widmore who writes that he is a “passionate gamer who loves the Nintendo Wii.”
  • Find a store with Wiis : Yahoo! has set up a few pages for the Wii, including a map of the nation with updated information on stores with Wiis in-stock.
  • Track Wiis online : This Web site offers updated information on online resellers who have Wiis in-stock. Also, the site tracks other electronics such as the Playstation3, Apple iPhone and TMX Elmo.

Medical student tries out latest Trauma Center

November 20th, 2007, 1:10 pm by

Still in his dark blue scrubs from studying radiology, 26-year-old John Murray from Huntington Beach tested out last night the latest version of the “Trauma Center” doctor game for the Nintendo Wii by Atlus, USA .

New Blood ” is the third installment of the dramatic operating room saga that debuted in 2005 for the handheld Nintendo DS. For more details on the game, CLICK HERE. Murray, a friend of mine, was excited when he first heard about the game. At first, Murray said the game was nothing like any other game he’s played, but thought the game could easily become boring.

JohnMurray

“I could see it not being challenging after playing for a little while,” Murray said.

And then, a 50-year-old man who had been shot in the chest with a rifle was rushed into the game’s remote Alaskan hospital. Murray was told to cut the man’s chest open and remove the two bullet fragments lodged in the heart.

The game instantly became challenging again for Murray, who killed the patient seven times before saving him on the eighth try.

“How fast do you have to go on this thing?” Murray asked as he rushed to pull the bullet from the heart before the patient died.

After fixing up a man who had a fight with a grizzly bear, extracting tumors from a stomach and removing a bullet from a heart, Murray was done for the night. He said the game was interesting and grows in difficulty fairly rapidly, but is nothing like actually operating on a patient, but Atlus told me that really isn’t the game’s intent.

When asked if he’d play again, Murray said “I think it would be fun if I was drinking.”

iGirl takes 1st against Mario, Sonic

November 12th, 2007, 3:00 pm by

For those who always wanted to be a jock, or even for those just tired of the Wii Sports game pack, the Sonic and Mario Olympics game for the Wii is a tiring but fun time.

iGirl wins on Wii Olympic games

I spent the weekend testing out the Olympics game pack with my boyfriend’s help — competing with him in events such as table tennis, 110 meter hurdles and the trampoline … all while having a sprained ankle, thanks to the Wii’s arms-only movements. The game released Nov. 6 is $49.99 at Target, GameStop , Best Buy and other locations ($44.99 at Amazon.com). It includes 20 real Olympic events, and a few fantasy events. You can play as one of 16 characters from Mario to Sonic games, or you can play as your Mii character, as I did.

Now, I preface this by saying that I am not a hard-core gamer. Yes, I own a Nintendo Wii and DS, but I’m usually just playing basic games such as Nintendo Play or Sports. So, it took me a while to catch on to the Olympic games. Some of the events, such as table tennis, gave me very little control which became very frustrating.Olympicgames

I had fun playing most of the events. After playing each a few times, I started to get the hang of it – rather than rereading the game controls each time. I eventually even won some medals, like the medal shown in the screen shot of me winning on the Mercury Circuit. But, I still cannot figure out how to succeed at the high jump.

The Costa Mesa-based GameSpot ranks the game “fair” and gives it a 6.0 rating out of a possible 10 points. The review says the game has a few great events, but the “big problem with Mario & Sonic is that the mechanics for most events just aren’t as much fun.” GameSpot says you will — and I did — start yelling at the TV because of poor instructions leading you to repeatedly fail at events.
