Peek at Toshiba laptop with PlayStation 3′s Cell chip

May 9th, 2008, 7:09 am by

With Toshiba just around the corner in Irvine, I’m lucky to get sneak peeks at what’s next. My last visit got me very excited because of what the company is doing inside its next Qosmio notebook: It’s adding the Cell.

Toshiba’s new Satellite laptops will have the Cell chipGamers may remember the Cell as the chip inside the Sony PlayStation 3. What I didn’t remember was that Toshiba and IBM worked with Sony on the chip. Then last fall, Sony sold its Cell-chip production factory to Toshiba. Should it surprise anyone that the Cell will be in certain Toshiba laptops by summer?

That’s the chip on the right, held by Dave McFarland, Toshiba’s product guy. It’s a quad-core HD cell processor that specializes in multimedia. Beyond the PlayStation 3, it’s also supposed to show up in Toshiba TVs and IBM supercomputers. And now… a Toshiba laptop.

The chip, now called the SpursEngine , won’t replace the Intel chip in the laptop. Rather, it’s a supplement that will handle video or other multimedia processing while Intel’s chip can concentrate on the usual computer duties. In useful language, Dave explained that a high-definition video that took him one hour to process now takes 10 minutes — a definite time saver.

And here’s a photo of a prototype of the new Qosmio:

Toshiba’s new Qosmio will have the Cell chip

Toshiba’s new Qosmio will have the Cell chipIf you’re a gaming enthusiast, you may be wondering, ‘Why is the Qosmio — the multimedia laptop — getting the chip first and not Toshiba’s gaming machines?’ He explained that games must be built to take advantage of the new chip. Playstation 3 games are. Computer games? Not at all. Game companies are currently working on such games but until then, it’s a waste.

“Our long-term goal is to work with companies like Adobe. Like, if you’re using Adobe Premier (video editing software), we could work with them to utilize the Cell engine,” he said.

Toshiba’s Qosmio gets the CellWhile the Cell was the exciting news, the new Qosmio also will have some other great features, including an 18.4-inch screen even though the laptop’s size won’t be bigger than its 17-inch predecessor…

Every thing is going green, even Ethernet

D-Link’s Green Ethernet

Who knew that Ethernet could go green? That’s apparently what D-Link Systems has produced.

The Fountain Valley company, known for its home networking products, sells Ethernet switches with special power-saving features. The switches can detect cable length and the activity of attached devices. When a computer, for example, becomes inactive, D-Link’s switch puts that port into a low power mode.

The smart switch knows when a computer connected to one of its ports goes to sleep or even if the cable is 20-meters instead of 100 meters (which would require full power). It adjusts power to the port accordingly.

Energy savings could be substantial, says the company. Up to 80 percent, if everything connected to the switch is off. But even in mixed mode — an office where PCs are on 10 hours a day and powered off for 14 hours a day — D-Link’s Green Ethernet products could cut energy use by 44 percent for each system.

Today, the company added “Web Smart” technology so the switches can be configured online. Available to buy in the third quarter, the D-Link Web Smart products, the DGS-1200T series, include the 16, 24, 48-port network switches.

And for all the bargain hunters out there: D-Link just reduced the price of the switches by 25 percent (starting around $50). Why? “Weakening economic conditions and uncertainties surround the business climate in particular,” said Steven Joe, D-Link’s president.

Toshiba adds 45nm Intel chips to consumer and gaming laptops

February 5th, 2008, 11:55 am by

Irvine-based Toshiba America Information Systems announced today a new laptop and an upgrade to an existing laptop — both making use of Intel technology.

satellite2816The Satellite U305-S2816 laptop for consumers has a 13.3-inch diagonal widescreen, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Windows Vista Home Premium, 2GBs of memory, a 250GB hard disk drive, 802.11n and a starting price of $1,349.99. The base unit weighs 4.6 pounds.

The Intel chip in the new laptop is called Penryn, which is also the name of a community in Placer County, California and a type of granite, according to former Intel engineer Dileep Bhandarkar. He writes on an Intel blog that the Penryn is the industry’s first 45-nanometer chip, and it delivers the same performance as Intel’s existing Core 2 Duo processors.

Intel was also added to Toshiba’s existing Satellite X205-SLI laptop designed for gamers. Intel’s 45-nanometer processor was added because it generates less heat and its faster CPU processor designed to withstand the long periods of graphics-heavy use common in computer gaming.satellitex205

The laptop comes with a 17-inch diagonal LCD widescreen monitor, two hard disk drives that total 320GBs, an embedded webcam and microphone, a fingerprint reader, an NVIDIA SLI Dual GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB GDDR3 discrete graphics memory, Bluetooth 2.0, 2GBs of memory with capacity for 4GBs, four built-in Harman Kardon stereo speakers with one sub-woofer and a one-year standard limited warranty. Those features can come packaged as the X205-SLI2 version for $1,999.99 or as the X205-SLI4 $2,499.99 which for $500 more offers a USB HDTV tuner.

Tamagotchi pets now available in families

February 4th, 2008, 10:43 am by

tama4Perfected the art of taking care of a Tamagotchi pet? Bandai America, with its headquarters in Cypress, released something just for you last week with the new Tamagotchi Connection V5 in which players take care of a family of virtual pets.tama1

While the Gadgetress never had one of these egg-shaped pets, I sure did. In high school in the late 90′s Tamagotchis were all the rage. A player chooses one of the 65 available Tamagotchi characters and then feeds, cares for and cleans up after the character.

The V5 model lets players raise a Familitchi (a family of three characters) with a theme: the Mames are the intellectuals, the Memes are artistic, Kuchis are laid back and the Violes are cheerful. The V5 also syncs up with TamaTown.com, a Web site of themed worlds and various games and activities.

The Connection V5 costs $14.99 and is available now at all major retailers. The company has more Tama plans with a pedometer, watch and Gotchi Gear line launching in July.

If you can’t tell what the i-SOBOT is doing in the graphic above, a Wii controller is making the mini robot dance around. The 6.5-inch robot was released this fall by Santa Ana’s TOMY Corp.

According to the makers of the free Robodance software:

The product is in the final design stages, but still operational — as can be seen in the video below. The formal release will be at the end of February.

The robot (or multiple robots) can be moved by using a WiiMote and Nunchuk. There are gestures the user makes with the controller and nunchuk that match all 35 of the possible iSobot gestures. Newbies can learn how to move the iSobot by watching a video.
