Olympic runner stopping by Tustin AT&T store

December 12th, 2008, 7:08 am by

If you’ve been eyeing the new BlackBerry Bold from AT&T Wireless, Saturday is a good time to get one — and meet an Olympic athlete while you’re at it.

AT&T, an official sponsor of the U.S. Olympics Team, is bringing track and field gold medalist Sanya Richards to Tustin to meet fans and sign autographs.

Richards won gold medals in the 4x400m relay competition in 2004 and 2008. She was also in six TV ads for AT&T that played off her speed, not to mention love of high-tech toys. This will be her only in-store appearance for AT&T.

As part of a marketing promotion, AT&T is offering a $100 mail-in rebate on the BlackBerry Bold, which has the “power and speed to match Sanya Richard’s speed on the track.” That’s from AT&T’s press release — not me.

Alt+Save time, money & the earth with the GadgetressIf you’ve been wanting to get rid of an old computer, TV or other electronic device, Newport Beach is hosting an e-waste event on Saturday.

The first 50 cars will receive a City of Newport Beach reusable bag “big enough to fit a turkey.” The event benefits Goodwill of Orange County.

Reminder, it’s illegal to toss an old monitor or computer into any trash can (but you knew that right?). All of this electronic waste must be discarded at a hazardous waste center or an e-waste event.

Meet the Orange County PC Club this Sunday

October 3rd, 2008, 11:33 am by

North Orange County Computer Club Q&A

If you’re a fan of this column, you’ve probably noticed that the PC Club question of the week has been absent both online and in print. Questions are still being answered but because the Register has cut back the printed paper, the next PC Club answer keeps getting postponed.

Since its fate is up in the air, I’ve decided to continue posting answers here online. So, if you haven’t signed up for the ‘Stump the PC Club’ e-mail to get the answer automatically sent to your inbox, you can sign up by sign up HERE. I will post a new answer on Tuesday.

In the meantime, stop by the club’s monthly meeting this Sunday and meet Jim Sanders and the gang — and maybe ask him why he hasn’t answered your question.

The North Orange County Computer Club meets this Sunday, Oct. 5, at Chapman University, Irvine Hall. The main meeting presenter is at 2 p.m.  See: www.noccc.org for more information.

Don Lewis, marketing director for Paragon Software Group in Irvine will demonstrate the firm’s Drive Backup program.  There will also be a drawing for a copy of the program.

Past Stump the PC Club Q&As:

  • How to get control of CTRL
  • Stump: How to send a large calendar by e-mail
  • Make Outlook Express work with AT&T e-mail
  • Stump the PC Club: Remove .NET update annoyance
  • Stump the PC Club: Organize DVDs, media with free database software
  • Recycle eWaste Saturday, get a discount at REI

    September 26th, 2008, 7:27 am by

Alt+Save time, money & the earth with the GadgetressIf you need an incentive to responsibly get rid of your old PC, TV or other eWaste, here’s your chance this Saturday.

The  recycling event will reward each person who donates an electronic waste item with one 15 percent discount coupon from outdoor specialty store REI. While REI shoppers (I assume) are friendly to the earth anyway, the discount is a nice touch from a store that rarely offers coupons.

The event is free and open to all. Bring old monitors, computers, cell phones, etc.   Ease-e-waste in Santa Ana is handling the recycling end of the event. Funds generated from the event will benefit The Grain Project, a Santa Ana nonprofit that supports sustainable communities, farmers’ markets, community gardens and public art.

    ::details::

    When: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27

Where: REI parking lot at the Bella Terra Mall, 7777 Edinger Ave., Suite 138, Huntington Beach

Acceptable trash: Answering machines, air conditioning units, camcorders, compact disc players, copies, duplicators, electric typewriters, fax machines, freezers, hard drives, laptops, mainframe computers, mobile phones, modems, microwave ovens, pagers, personal computers (CPU, monitors, keyboards, mouse, and peripherals), printers, printed circuit boards, radios, refrigerators, remote controls, scanners, stoves and ranges, stereos, tape players, telephones and telephone equipment, televisions, testing equipment, transparency makers, uninterruptible power supplies, VCR’s, and word processors.
