AT&T adds 2 cell sites in Irvine, Orange

AT&T has added new 3G wireless cell sites in Irvine and Orange. The company could not provide details on the locations.

The 3G cell sites includes the recent upgrade to High-Speed Packet Access 7.2 technology, which should speed up Internet browsing and data transmission on the cellular network.

The company also announced new sites in San Bernardino and Chino and one in Kern County’s Shafter.

AT&T plans to add 200 cell sites in California, which should be good news to local iPhone users.

AT&T on a roll, improves cell reception in 5 more cities

AT&T WirelessAnother slew of cell sites are up and running in Orange County that improve iPhone and 3G cell reception for AT&T customers. The new sites, which come one week after 6 others in O.C. were turned on, mean better wireless coverage in those areas. So speak up with a comment below if you notice a difference.

The new sites are near these intersections:

  • Dana Point: Near the intersection of Camino Del Avion and Golden Lantern St.
  • Santa Ana: Near the intersection of S. Grand Ave. and McFadden Ave.
  • Orange: Near the 55 Freeway and E. Katella Ave.
  • Huntington Beach: Near the intersection of Bolsa Chica Street and Heil Ave.
  • Anaheim: Near the intersection of Van Buren St. and La Palma Ave.
They are among 20 new sites announced today. Other cities getting better reception include Los Angeles, Glendale, Woodland Hills, Encino, Covina, Rialto, Cherry Valley, Beaumont, Montclair, Paso Robles, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga

All of AT&T’s 3G cell sites have been upgraded to HSPA 7.2 software, which means faster mobile Internet if you have an HSPA device. Think 7.2 mbps!

This isn’t the next generation 4G service being tested by Verizon and Sprint in other parts of the country. This is High Speed Packet Access 7.2, sometimes called Turbo 3G. AT&T’s plans to begin testing 4G (using Long Term Evolution technology, or LTE) next year and will offer 4G service in 2011.

HSPA requires a software upgrade. This is supported by souped-up cell sites, which are being linked by fiber-optic cables for to improve speeds. But each site must be activated so it’s an ongoing project. Orange County and Los Angeles was picked as one of six markets that will get the faster Internet speeds first. AT&T won’t what chunk of our area can already use the faster speeds but the company confirmed that activation has begun  in Orange County. AT&T expects the majority of mobile traffic will utilize the new technology by the end of the year.

Psssst: Digital cable TV is cheaper than analog cable

Time Warner Cable signHere’s a little known fact about cable TV service from Time Warner Cable: Digital cable is cheaper than analog.

In Orange County, Time Warner’s digital cable package includes 200 channels, on-demand video and one special tier of channels (movies, variety, sports, etc.) for $50.95. This is the published rate, not a special promotion. You will need to rent a digital cable box for $6/month.

Basic analog cable, which is $55.50 to $58 per month depending on what city you live in, offers much less. That number shrunk this week as Time Warner moved some of these analog channels (ABC Family, The Weather Channel, TruTV) to digital to make room for more digital services for the majority of its customers. AT&T’s official list of Orange County cities getting U-verse TV

Where is AT&T's U-verse service?

Readers, I’m heading to my second day of jury duty so posts will be on hold. But here’s something for Orange County readers who are hoping to get AT&T’s alternative TV service, U-verse, in their city.

To supplement an ongoing series of updates as to what happened to the AT&T U-verse rollout in Orange County, the company gave me this updated list of cities where it is building U-verse.

Keep in mind, service may not be available in all the cities yet, but AT&T is working on building the service there.

Learn to build Web sites, add e-commerce at next PC Club meeting

The North Orange County Computer Club, which answers the weekly ‘Stump the PC Club‘ has just posted details of its next meetings on April 5.

Developer Mark Carter will cover websites from personal website development to e-Commerce web store applications. Questions will be welcome.  You will leave the discussion with a global understanding of how to establish a Web presence and what is required to set up and run an e-Commerce Web site.

Talk tech, BlackBerrys and Verizon with the PC Club

Fans of the weekly ‘Stump the PC Club‘ column can ask questions in person this Sunday at the club’s monthly meeting.

The North Orange County Computer Club will host a presentation by Verizon Wireless representatives, who will focus on smartphones like the BlackBerry.

Here’s the gist of the meeting: 

Multiple representatives from Verizon Wireless will present, including the data sales consultant and the Blackberry representative. They will also be covering some of the iconic devices and data services such as the wireless mobile broadband cards. They will be discussing and comparing different devices which will give our audience and potential customers a better understanding of which device would be the best for their needs. At the end of the presentation, they will open the floor to our audience and will have a Q&A session. A request has been made for them to explain some of the less commonly used features that a lot of the newer phones offer.

Free Best Buy gift cards at O.C. e-waste events

Alt+Save time, money & the earth with the GadgetressAnother chance to score some free stuff while disposing of your old computers and other e-junk starts Friday. The “Pull the Plug on e-Waste” event will take place at three Best Buy stores in Orange County on Friday and Saturday.

The first 100 cars each day will get a $5 Best Buy gift card. Everyone will also be entered into a contest to win a Toshiba Portégé R500, the laptop that has received one of the highest green ranking from the Green Electronics Council. Plus Jeff Levy, host of radio show “Jeff Levy on Computers” on KRLA, will be at the east Orange Best Buy on Friday to answer questions about computers.

The event is sponsored by Toshiba’s Digital Products Division, which is based in Irvine.

**UPDATE 9:36 a.m. ** Based on the first comment below, I should remind readers that it’s against the law in California to toss an old PC, monitor or other electronic with a screen into the trash. That’s why there’s a $6 to $10 fee tacked on to any electronics purchase that contain displays. Since these are considered hazardous waste, you’ll need to take it to a hazardous waste center. Toshiba’s PC recycling program now accepts all e-junk

How nice. Toshiba America has expanded its free notebook recycling program to include the old, unwanted e-junk of its competitors. 

The company’s Digital Products Division, based in Irvine,  will now accept most consumer electronics. It’s free and you don’t have to purchase a Toshiba product to dump your junk. 

Of course, only certain e-junk is allowed. Items accepted include laptops, Tablet PCs, monitors, projectors, cameras, camcorders, servers, home audio receivers, cell phones, car audio, home electronics, auto electronics, mobile phones, PDAs, MP3 players, game systems and GPS navigation systems. The items don’t even have to be in working condition.

If you do have a working product, you may be able to get some cash backand not just some sneaky discount on a future Toshiba product. Just run your old laptop or whatever through the Toshiba product value estimator at toshiba.com/recycle.
