QUESTION: I have Microsoft Outlook as my e-mail program and I have a large list of contacts. I would like to group my contacts into subgroups.  For example, I have a group of about 30 high school classmates that I would like in one group. Such grouping would make it far simpler for me to enter into the “To” box when sending an e-mail to them.  I have similar contacts that I would like to put into subgroups.  I would still wish to keep the entire single list so I can send an individual e‑mail.

PC CLUB: Group e-mail lists are a very handy feature and quite easy to implement. The term that’s used to describe this type of list in Outlook is a Distribution List. In Outlook Express it is simply called a Group. In the new Windows Live Mail program it is called a Category and in Windows Vista’s e-mail program, Windows Mail, it is called a Contact Group. Microsoft has changed the name with each version of it software, how rude is that? Read the rest of this entry »

QUESTION: I notice that the Contacts folder in Windows 7 does not match the Contacts in Windows Live Mail, however, in Vista the Contacts folder does match the Contacts in Windows Mail. What happened?

PC CLUB: The Contacts feature built into Windows has changed with each new version of Windows including XP, Vista and now, Windows 7. This is related to how the built-in support for e‑mail has changed. Windows XP uses the term Addresses and subsequent versions use the term Contacts but the terms are interchangeable. The implementation in each version is as follows: Read the rest of this entry »

QUESTION: I have a dilemma. I use MS Windows XP with AT&T Yahoo. In my profession as a publisher of in-house newspapers, I continually utilize the “Save As a Draft” email feature. I use this as deadline reminders for the Marketing Departments and/or Outside Advertising agencies. Normally there are three reminders per advertising month. Until recently, the drafts remained in the folder – all of a sudden, as I emailed from the draft folder – the emails were sent, but the drafts disappeared. This is causing me to rewrite the emails and dispensing valuable time. What happened? I received absolutely no help when calling AT&T. If this dilemma is no longer workable at AT&T, is the solution available elsewhere? Tony

PC Club: Using the Drafts folder can come in handy in either Web Mail programs such as Yahoo Mail or in Internet e-mail programs such as Outlook Express. Regarding your dilemma, it looks like a simple change to the Yahoo Mail options will eliminate your frustrations. Read the rest of this entry »

QUESTION: I am using Outlook Express for my e-mails. Is there a way to receive e-mails “ONLY” from people that are in your address book?

PC Club: Many of us are getting frustrated with spammers and are resorting to various measures including the use of Anti-Spam software which isn’t always free or unobtrusive. Another way to prevent unwanted or unsolicited email is to set up a Whitelist, which is what you want to do.

A Whitelist is just the opposite of a Blacklist and will only allow senders on the list to reach your Inbox while the rest will be deleted. It is quite easy to set up a Whitelist in Outlook Express by performing the following steps: Read the rest of this entry »

QUESTION: For some time now I have been receiving this message from Yahoo and it seems that anything I try to do doesn’t solve this problem. I use Outlook Express. Here is the message:

Dear AT&T Yahoo! Customer,

We noticed that you are accessing email using non-secure settings in your email software. We would like to ensure that your AT&T Yahoo! Member ID, password, and email messages are transmitted securely between your mail software (such as Outlook or Outlook Express) and the AT&T Yahoo! Mail servers. In order to meet this need, please enable SSL via the instructions that are available on the Help site.

Since multiple email notifications have already been sent out about this, we request that you please make the necessary changes immediately. Remember, you need to make these changes if you want to continue to send/receive email using a mail client. Thank you for your cooperation ~ AT&T Yahoo! Customer Support

NOCCC: The main reason you have been receiving this message is an effort to make it more difficult for the bad guys to send unsolicited e-mail, a.k.a. SPAM. For years, e-mail servers used the same two ports (connection addresses #25 and #110) to send and receive e-mail. By changing those two addresses and requiring that your connection to the e-mail server be authenticated, the problem has been reduced. Read the rest of this entry »

How to convert Outlook Express; Checking drives for errors

July 8th, 2008, 9:39 am by

NOCCC group has experts in Windows, Word and all sorts of computer topics. The club, which meets monthly on various topics, has been in existence since 1976. Visit the club’s site at noccc.org.

Question: I have been using Outlook Express for many years and I also own Office 2000, which contains Outlook. I want to convert from Outlook Express to Outlook, but I also want to keep the address book and copies of e-mails I have stored in “Express.” How can I switch over to Outlook and also retain all the items in my “Local Folders”?

Item No. 2: I have an external Hard Disk (Western Digital WD120B005-RNN). Something happened that won’t allow me to access the data. When I plug it into the USB port the drive appears in “Explorer” but no data shows up. I think the directory is fouled up somehow. Is there a way to correct this?

NOCCC: To upgrade from Outlook Express, first go to the “File” menu in Outlook, and click “Import and Export.”

The Import and Export Wizard opens and presents a list. Click “Import Internet Mail and Addresses,” and then click “Next.”

From that list, select “Outlook Express 4.x, 5.x, 6.x.” Read the rest of this entry »

How do you autofill addresses in Outlook?

June 10th, 2008, 1:02 am by

NOCCC group has experts in Windows, Word and all sorts of computer topics. The club, which meets monthly on various topics, has been in existence since 1976. Visit the club’s site at noccc.org.

Question: I also have problems with Microsoft Outlook 2000. I had Outlook on Windows 98 and when I started typing in an email address it would automatically fill them in. This saved a lot of time. I can’t even find any autotyping category to make the change. Can it be done on this version and how? Second problem is that the signatures box won’t let me access a signature let alone create one. What’s wrong with this Outlook program?

NOCCC: As it came from Microsoft, Outlook 2000 didn’t have the auto-complete feature you want. There may be some add-in or add-on software for Outlook 2000 that gives it that ability. It does have a feature that might best be called auto-choose. The first requirement for auto-choose is to have entries in your Contacts list. They can be entered manually or semi-automatically as follows:
