50% off Roku HD to first 500 Black Friday shoppers

November 26th, 2009, 10:49 pm by

Roku HDXR digital video playerPassing along… Hey Black Friday shoppers, the month-old Roku HD-XR Player (mentioned here in October) is half off to the first 500 customers beginning at 8 a.m. California time on Black Friday. That makes it $64.99 and Roku is tossing in free shipping.

The Roku boxes plug into a TV and allows users to stream movies from Netflix, Amazon Video and other online sources. There are three available, this one stream high-definition video and has an HDMI port. These are devices that give consumers more options on their big-screen TV without having to pay a monthly cable bill.

Since I know some readers were interested in this device, I just wanted to share this deal that was e-mailed to me by the company. If you’re interested, here are the steps to getting the 50 percent discount:

1. Go to blackfriday.roku.com starting at 8 a.m. Pacific Standard Time Friday.

2. Follow the instructions and enter the code “hdxrsteal” at checkout. The code can be applied to one Roku HD-XR Player.

Spreading the word: Roku added two more devices today to stream Netflix movies, Amazon Video on Demand and MLB.TV and other content to your TV.

The Roku SD player starts at $79. The Roku HD-XR, $129, adds Wi-Fi’s 802.11n technology plus a USB port for future use.

These join Roku’s existing $99 HD player, which came out in May 2008. All have Wi-Fi. You can compare the three products HERE on Roku’s site.

Major League Baseball headed to Roku web device

August 11th, 2009, 7:11 am by

Roku player now offers Major League Baseball games.Readers have been asking for alternatives to paid TV service. Here’s one: Roku, a little $99 black box that attaches to your TV and pipes in HD movies and shows from the Internet. You can’t watch everything, but between Amazon’s Video on Demand and Netflix movies, you can pick and choose movies and pay as you go.

And now you can watch Major League Baseball games for a monthly fee. Roku announced a deal late last night to offer out-of-market baseball games in high-definition when available. They’re not quite live but games are available 90 minutes after the game ends, according to Roku’s site. Games from the past week will also be available on demand.

The MLB.com channel will show up on Roku players in the next few days, but if you can’t wait, you can update the player immediately by going to the “Settings” button, then “Player Info” and choosing “Check for update.”

The MLB offering is the same one the league offers to PC viewers online. MLB Premium is $19.95 a month or $34.95 for the year. With Roku, it’s just a bit easier to watch the games on your big HDTV.
