Free software every day plus win a clone of your dog and HDTVs

June 1st, 2008, 6:34 am by

Alt+Save: Deals and freebiesIf you don’t know about Giveaway of the Day, bookmark it. It’s a site that offers one new licensed software product every day. This isn’t a trial version. It’s the real deal.

What’s the catch? Don’t expect free tech support or free upgrades to future versions. It’s strictly for personal use and mostly available for Windows PCs only. And you can’t just save the program to install at a later date. Install it on the same day it’s free otherwise it won’t work. I can live with that.

Free software every dayThe site started in 2006 and surprisingly or not, it is still handing out freebies daily. If you want to dwell on the dark side of free, GotD was created to help software developers promote their products and get customer feedback. Companies want to know what you think. However, there’s no registration required to download so you’re not handing over any personal information, including an e-mail address. And the company still gets paid by GotD for the free licenses downloaded, although GotD doesn’t mention if it pays full price. It’s win-win, says GotD.

For consumers, the other nice thing about GotD is because it’s popular, there are a lot of users who actively comment. Comments will tip you off on whether the product works or what issues you may encounter. Friday’s giveaway, Xilisoft’s DVD Ripper Ultimate, has quite a few people mentioning installation problems. Others weren’t so impressed and even suggested a favorite alternative.

Either way, the site is a good spot to search and try new software. Keep it if you like. Delete it if you don’t. And for gamers, check out the Game Giveaway of the Day.

And for Mac users, GotD is considering offering Mac-related software someday. In the meantime, check out sites for discounted Mac software, such as MacZot.com, Softpedia.com and Mac Update Promo (mupromo.com).

Tax rebate discounts on electronics

Economic Stimulus checkInspired by posts on Fast Food Maven and our retail blogger, I did some sleuthing about where you can get a little bit more from Uncle Sam & corporate America.

RadioShack will cash your federal stimulus check or refund and give you 10 percent discount on purchases between $50 and $2,500 — no product is excluded. If you don’t want to spend it all at RadioShack, the remainder will be put on a Vision Silver Prepaid MasterCard. Details HERE.

DealNews.com also mentions several other stores trying to lure you in, including Sams Club, Staples, Wal-Mart and Sears.

And while you’re at it, enter eBillMe’s Shopping Confessions‘ monthly contest to win $1,000. Just submit a story about what you’re doing with your tax refund of stimulus check. Best video or written confession wins the cash.

Bank offers free anti-phishing software

May 23rd, 2008, 9:12 am by

ING Direct bank offers free security softwareIf you bank at ING DIRECT, the Wilmington, Del.-bank just announced it’s offering free anti-phishing software to all customers.

The Rapport software from Isreal’s Trusteer protects against online identity theft and threats such as phishing, pharming, keyloggers, man-in-the-middle attacks, man-in-the-browser attacks, screen-scrapers, and session hijacking. Did you know all of these even exist?

According to a Computer World article, “The tool is easy to install and, once in place, runs in the background — launching whenever the user logs onto ING’s site.”

Hopefully, it’s just as friendly as the image below from Rapport’s web site.

However, the software is not available yet. It’s coming this summer and will be available at INGDirect.com, according to the bank.

CSUF’s Chief Information Technology Officer, Amir Dabirian, said the software will help to connect the unviersity’s 236-acre main campus as well as satellite learning centers in Irvine, Santa Ana and Garden Grove.

iLinc Communications from Phoenix makes the software suite, which works on Mac and Windows computers. All four iLinc programs offer the same basic level of functionality:

  • Online sessions can be recorded and stored as videos.
  • Progress of online courses or support requests can be tracked.
  • Polls and surveys can be conducted
  • Text chats can be served.
  • Desktops and applications can be remotely shared from one computer to other computers.
  • An Internet-based whiteboard allows for posting of ideas and notes.
  • Documents and media files can be stored and shared in one central location.
  • Meetings or courses can be scheduled. The program e-mails the invitees and tracks RSVPs.

More specifics on each program:

ConferenceLinc is very similar to MeetingLinc, but is intended for hosting of large events such as marketing seminars, investor or stockholder meetings, virtual press tours and large internal communication meetings.

Broadcom explains Android Alliance

November 7th, 2007, 8:00 am by

AndroidSmall

As soon as I heard that Irvine-based Broadcom was part of Google‘s Open Handset Alliance, I made contact with them to find out why they joined the Alliance, what it means for consumers and how their decision will effect its other partnerships.

In case you haven’t heard, the Alliance is a group of 34 tech companies who have banded together to support the launch of Google’s Android platform for mobile devices. Google provided the artwork at right to illustrate the concept, which includes an operating system and a software development kit for third-party developers to use when creating applications for that operating system.

Here are Broadcom’s answers to my questions:

Why did Broadcom join the Open Handset Alliance?

Broadcom is a strong supporter of open operating systems for mobile handsets. Broadcom shares the OHAs goal of enabling innovation to help grow adoption of smartphones and other mobile Internet-connected devices.

Massive student discount on Microsoft software

September 13th, 2007, 10:45 am by

Microsoft’s ultimate deal for studentsI’m a big bargain hunter so Microsoft’s latest deal makes me wish I was still in college.

Eligible college students can buy Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 (includes the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and something called Groove) for $59.95. Us non-students have to fork over $600 for the same package.

Microsoft even launched a special site to promote the deal: www.theultimatesteal.com

To qualify: You need a valid .edu e-mail address and be enrolled at eligible educational institutions. I didn’t see a list of schools but the above web site lets you check eligibility by e-mail.

Dig deeper into Microsoft’s press pitch to discover a good reason why the company is giving students a 90 percent break: To prevent sharing software and/or pirated software.

Ahh… now it makes sense.

Stump the Gadgetress: Solving e-mail’s Red X

August 13th, 2007, 4:35 pm by

Stump the GadgetressQ: Why is it that when I receive mail with graphics there is an empty box with a red x or a logo in the upper left hand corner of the box. Conversely when the graphics are present in the mail I receive, when I forward said mail, the graphics don’t show up?

By the way, I right click on the red x, and then select “show pic”, but nothing happens?? - Jim Carneghi, Mission Viejo, CA

Red X marks the missing image spotGadgetress: Think of the Red X as protection against the digital unknown. But what’s so dangerous about an image in an e-mail?

Don’t get paranoid but remember, computer viruses are often spread when someone opens an infected e-mail. Usually, a suspicious attachment is to blame.

Google tools for work?

May 16th, 2007, 3:47 pm by

googleentpro.gifIf you use Gmail, share spreadsheets with Google Docs or track the day with Google calendar, you probably started using the same tools for work life, not just personal. But you could do away with the ads and you’d prefer if your Gmail address had your company’s domain. Mostly, though, if you’re like me, you wish your company

drawlooplogo.jpgAnd from an Orange County company no less! DrawLoop in Irvine added a Firefox browser plugin to easily convert Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoints to Adobe PDF files.

Just install THIS plugin using FireFox and restart. A little icon appears in the Firefox menu bar that directs you to upload files or add an URL for instant conversion. Like so:

It’s FREE but you do have to register. I just tried it myself and it works!
