Stump: Laptop battery lifespan

December 24th, 2007, 3:00 pm by

helpme!Q: Does a battery last long for a laptop? I’m going to buy a laptop for my son. He is in high school. Thank you again! ~ Shirley

Gadgetress: I asked the folks at FreshBattery.com to handle this one. The Irvine e-tailer sells laptop batteries and is also a resource for people who want to get more out of their batteries.

Todd Rapparport, FreshBattery’s Vice President of Marketing, reminds that even though computer batteries are rechargeable, they have a limited life.Stump the Gadgetress

While modern technology has enabled us to extend the life of rechargeable batteries, they only last for a certain number of ‘charge cycles’ before they lose their ability to hold a charge.

A lithium-ion notebook battery typically provides at least 300 discharge/charge cycles before its runtime is greatly diminished. How long this takes depends on how you use your notebook. Typically this will be between 1 and 3 years of use.

Keep in mind that your son can probably work with his laptop plugged in when he is home, which means he won’t be draining the battery at all. That will extend the battery’s life tremendously.

If you’re worried about the battery running out while away from a power source, you can always buy an extra one. They are pretty easy to switch out and not too expensive. You can buy a battery for a Toshiba laptop, for example, for around $100. A battery for an Apple laptop is about $129.

Q: I bought a 19″ ViewSonic monitor and a friend set it up for me. I’m the first to admit my knowledge of computers is pretty much limited to recognizing one when I see it. My new home screen is great except that an annoying message keeps appearing: For best picture quality change resolution to 1440 x 900. Press “1″ to clear message. Press “2″ to disable message.

Stump: Sharing programs with mulitple users on one PC

October 9th, 2007, 2:00 am by

Stump the GadgetressQ: I have two accounts in my computer. Mine is the administrator and the other one is my daughter’s.

How do I make programs in my account accessible to her account?

Thanks for your help. ~ Hector Smith

Gadgetress: User accounts let many people from the same family share the one computer — but not the same bookmarks, e-mail or software settings. It’s good for parents who don’t want their kids installing unknown software on the machine.stumpusers1200.jpg

It’s also a good way to surf the Internet without worrying that some malicious site is going to install some nasty software on your machine. Read on…

Stump: Is someone watching your every keystroke?

September 25th, 2007, 12:00 am by

Stump the GadgetressQ: I read somewhere that there is a folder or something or other in my PC that keeps track of all my keystrokes. Is this just an urban myth or is there some truth to this?

Also, when I go into the Windows folder, I see a ton of text documents that date back to around the time I first got my PC. I’m tempted to delete them, but I’m afraid to muck with them, because I don’t want to mess up my computer.

Am I just paranoid or what? ~ Jason Beltran, Garden Grove

Gadgetress: Paranoid is my first response. If Microsoft built something so sneaky into its Windows operating system, the security world would be up in arms. Or at least I hope they would.

You are probably thinking about keylogging software, which can be installed surreptitiously on a computer without the user knowing.
