Versus is back on DirecTV

March 15th, 2010, 3:15 pm by

Good news for DirecTV sports fans: The satellite TV service is bringing back VERSUS, a sports channel that viewers lost last summer when owner Comcast and DirecTV failed to come to an agreement. As with these sorts of deals, details were disclosed.

The channel, known for bull riding, hockey and college football, returns today, DirecTV announced. It will resume where it left off in August. It remains in the same TV plan offered to customers.

Bull riding fan? Better get Dish

Professional Bull Rider Noted: Dish Network announced today that it became the official satellite TV partner of  The Professional Bull Riders, Inc., which is good news for “millions of PBR fans,” said the organization’s chief executive Randy Bernard in  press release.

But this isn’t an announcement for a new Bull Riding TV channel. This is related to the ongoing dispute between two different companies: DirecTV and the sports channel Versus.

DirecTV stopped offering Versus last month. Versus was one of the few channels offering bull riding, hockey and some college football.

Today’s deal indicates that Versus won’t be showing up on DirecTV anytime soon. Dish calls its new partnership with the PBR exclusive, at least for satellite TV and through the end of the year and certain events in 2010.

Outside the “exclusive” satellite TV, Versus is also available to nearly all paying TV customers in Orange County. It’s on channel 267 and 469 on Time Warner Cable;  90 and 590 on Verizon FiOS, 640 and 1640 for AT&T U-verse customers and channel 765 for Cox.
Dish is making the most of the situation,  offering Versus for free to all customers through Nov. 30. Dish Network has Versus on Channel 151.
Cox is also part of the free preview through Nov. 30.

Cox offers O.C. free peek at Versus sports channel

Versus TV, a sports channelCox Communications is offering its Orange County customers a free preview of Versus, the sports channel known for broadcasting bull riding, hockey and college football. Versus is the channel that caused a big hubbub last month when DirecTV customers stopped carrying it. (Whoops, I didn’t mean customers.)

Versus, on channel 334  and channel 717 765 for HD, is free to all Cox digital customers until Nov. 30. (Corrected 9/21/09)

The channel, previously called the Outdoor Life Network, changed its name to Versus in 2006. Cox picked up the HD channel in 2007, and it’s now is part of Cox’s Sports and Info digital tier. That tier starts at $62.49 and includes standard digital cable TV service.

Versus is also part of Time Warner Cable’s lineup (channel 267 and 469), Verizon FiOS (Channel 90 and 590), AT&T U-verse (channel 640 and 1640) and Dish Network (151).

Dish is also offering its customers free access to the channel until Dec. 2.

It’s official: Versus stripped from DirecTV

September 1st, 2009, 3:15 pm by

Versus TV channel kicked off DirecTV.UPDATE, 3:52 p.m.: Dish Network wants to lure DirecTV viewers away with new Versus offer. See below.

Sports channel Versus was officially dropped today from DirecTV’s lineup, as viewers probably noticed after weeks of Versus’ pleas scrolling on screen.

Comcast Corp.-owned Versus says it can’t believe DirecTV rejected its  ”fair and reasonable offer” while DirecTV called the terms unfair. Umm.. okay. Sounds like it was about money. Read each company’s explanation: Versus vs. DirecTV.

Carriage fees, or the cash paid to channels by TV providers, has been a big issue with companies. Costs are apparently rising and TV providers say that they don’t want to pass on the cost to us consumers.

I guess they feel we pay enough for TV as is.

UPDATE: Just got a message from Dish Network’s marketing team. It, of course, is all too happy to offer Versus to any forlorn DirecTV customer. Starting today, DISH Network is offering Versus – free for three months. This offer is for new and existing customers and is applicable to standard and high-definition channel, which are on 151 and 151HD. Free access ends Dec. 2, 2009.
