Gadgetress status: Where am I?

December 25th, 2009, 7:28 am by

Pinkified GadgetressThere is a live person running this blog daily, sometimes nightly and sometimes on weekend. Yes, all me.

In the last month or so, I’ve started a little spot on the right sidebar labeled “Gadgetress Status” to let folks know what I’m up to for the day. If I’m playing around with a fun new gadget, you’ll read about it right there. If I hear of a possible outage but can’t verify it? I’ll ask readers for input. If I need suggestions from readers?  I’ll add my e-mail to make it easier for you all. On vacation? Check my status.

Star Wars Mimobot Captain Clone RexSince I know quite a few readers check the Gadgetress blog through RSS feeds or e-mail subscriptions, but this is one method of tracking me down every day. As an added incentive for readers to check, I may even offer a freebie. Like today: I’ve got a Star Wars Mimobot, a 4-GB USB drive that looks like Clone Captain Rex. Want one? Keep reading.

I’m on vacation until January 4, but I’ll be checking e-mail, comments and any movements made by the local cable and TV companies. And I’m getting ready for the Consumer Electronics Show, which starts a few days after I return.

So, even though I’m “gone,” I’m looking for any suggestions, tips and still want to hear from readers on any problems or frustrations when it comes to TV service or other tech-related services. E-mail me at gadgetress@gmail.com or leave a comment below.

From today through Jan. 4, anyone who leaves a comment or sends me an e-mail with ‘Gadgetress status’ in the subject line will be added to a drawing to win Captain Rex. (By the way, the Star Wars drive is a Lucas Arts pitch to get me to write about some new games, which I don’t cover. It includes press releases, which I can include for the winner if they want it…)

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year and good luck!

Help your favorite local charity win $10k from Cox Cable

July 6th, 2009, 5:19 pm by

Cox Cares, the community-grant-giving arm of Cox Communications, is offering $10k to local charties.Interesting little contest from the local office of Cox Communications: The Rancho Santa Margarita company is giving away grants of $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000 to a deserving charity that gets the most public votes.

Through its Cox Cares charity program, the cable TV provider wants to reward local organizations who are doing something to make life better for its local customers and employees.

Charities that wish to be considered need to apply by midnight on Friday, July 10, 2009. Organizations need to be based in Orange County, North Camp Pendleton and Palos Verdes and can apply at www.cox-cares.org/grants. A tip: The committee will judge non-profits on ”the quality of the program and its impact on the areas of youth, education and seniors.”

Cox will then review applications and choose the finalists. And on August 14, Cox Cares will post the finalists online at www.cox-cares.org/grants and start tallying votes from the public on which organization is most deserving of a grant. The winners will be notified at an awards ceremony in September.

Much of the money, says Cox, was donated by its 1,000 employees in Rancho Santa Margarita. The local office has donated $600,000 over the years to 95 local nonprofit organizations.

Contest alert: Vizio giving away 500 55-inch HDTVs

February 5th, 2009, 5:59 pm by

If you were like me, you saw the Vizio TV commercial during Super Bowl, but kept watching TV instead of checking out the Irvine TV seller’s $1 million contest online. (In fact, some people thought the commercial was the worst commercial this year.)

The company sent me a reminder today. And it’s actually a pretty good contest worth mentioning to readers. Vizio is giving away 500 55-inch LCD TVs with 120 Hz refresh rate and 9 high definition inputs (drool). It plans to hand out 17 of the $1,999 XVT series TVs every week beginning Feb. 23 through Aug. 31. The last weekend it’s giving away 24, which makes a grand total of 500 TVs or $1 million.

All you need to do is enter at Vizio.com, or 70.32.72.72, which asks that you submit a “Your Vizio Story” on how you found Vizio and its impact on your life.  Tell them you heard about it on Gadgetress and maybe they’ll give you bonus points (kidding).

Apparently, many Super Bowl viewers did visit the site during or after the game. Visits to its site grew 400 percent after the commercial aired, the company said.

Last chance to enter the contest is Aug. 14, 2009. Good luck!

Hey kids: Invent a game, win $10k and a publisher!

December 4th, 2008, 6:48 pm by

Winning $10,000 is always nice but the cool thing about this contest is that the winner’s game will be published by Electronic Arts as a free web game.

The ”Invent-A-Game Challenge” is open to kids in the U.S. between 5 to 19 years old. Entry seems simple — come up with an idea and submit it to this web site, www.bkfk.com.

The competition is sponsored by Best Buy, Electronic Arts, The United Inventors Association and By Kids for Kids.

Now, what will it take to win? Some hints on the web site: It’s looking for “designs similar to, but not limited to” puzzle games like Tetris and Bejeweled; run, jump, avoid and adventure games like Super Mario Brothers and Fancy Pants Adventure; and strategy games like Billiards and Besieged.

All entries must be received online by March 31, 2009.

Besides getting his or her game published, the Grand Prize winner also wins a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond, trips to Best Buy and EA headquarters, and a $100 Best Buy gift card.

Contest alert: Canon looking for pop stars. Know any?

November 5th, 2008, 2:00 pm by

In this new age when anyone can be a pop star, anyone, apparently, can also start a contest to find America’s next star.

Canon U.S.A., the digital camera/scanner/printer company, just announced its version: the “So you want to be a pop star?” contest.

Let’s start with the prizes. Three finalists will get a trip to New York City, a pair of tickets to a local radio station’s holiday concert, a Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Elph camera, makeovers, singing and dancing lessons and a meet and greet with “international pop star” Leona Lewis (Leona who? Oh.) The ultimate winner will also get $5,000.

But to even get a chance to be a finalist, you’ll have to invest some time and money into creating a 30-second video showing why you should be selected as a finalist. Submit it to powershot.com. The contest will accept entries until Nov. 30.  Three finalists will be selected and each will get to create a more professional 60- to 90-second video. Then it really becomes a popularity contest where the public votes on a favorite. The winner will be announced Jan. 5.

Now, whether those folks will actually become pop stars, that’s a whole other contest called reality sinks in.
