Wii Fit selling out fast

See updates below…

If you didn’t line up this morning for a Nintendo Wii Fit, you may be out of luck. Many local stores contacted reported they were out of stock of the $89.99 gaming accessory minutes after the store opened.

OCRegister reporter Niyaz Pirani told me he showed up minutes before the Aliso Mission Viejo Target opened at 8 a.m. He was the 20th person in line and the new game accessory sold out by 8:01. There were 44 in stock. Read his tale HERE.

Gadgetress contributor Sonya ‘iGirl’ Smith also found herself in line at the Target in Cerritos at 7:40 a.m. The store had 40 in stock and she left with one as well.

At Best Buy, early reports say that Wii Fits are likely sold out through the chain, according to a spokesperson. She didn’t know when more would be in but offered some advice: “Customers just keep checking back and sometimes they can befriend the game people because then they’re on a first name basis,” she said.

Online, it’s a sad story: Wal-Mart is out of stock. Amazon is out (it sold 2.5 Wii’s a minute in pre-orders!) and offers Wii Fits only from its market sellers, starting at $140. Same with Buy.com, which was offering one from a retail partner for $170.

However… there are some still available!!

At 10:51 a.m., the Best Buy in Westminister still had a few left but the sales associate said he couldn’t put any on hold. “I’d recommend you come in and get it,” he told me.

The Wal-Mart in Anaheim still had “a whole bunch — about 20,” said one clerk. That was at 10:57 a.m.

The Wal-Mart in Buena Park still had a dozen by 11 a.m. The store had received 60.

Circuit City stores still have some available in stores. At 11 a.m., its handy in-store tracker shows that Fullerton still had Wii’s. Update: By 1 p.m., all the Wii’s in OC and parts of Los Angeles and San Diego counties were out of stock.

Here are the list of stores that said they would have Wii Fits on sale today:

  • Target stores: Opens at 8 a.m.
  • Toys R Us: Available Wednesday. Also taking $10 off “Wii We Ski” game if you buy the Fit. Details HERE.
  • Circuit City: Advertises that you can get its Gamer Savings Card, for $19.99 a year, you can save 10 percent on future games and accessories.
  • Best Buy
  • GameCrazy
  • GameStop - Limit of two per household
  • KMart
  • Sears - Out of stock online but on sale Wednesday in stores.
  • Costco: Usually, Costco offers a discount or a bundle though its web site apparently isn’t selling the gadget yet.

i got one from Game Stop around noon but they were almost out!

I went into Fry’s in Anaheim at 8:15 this morning. Seemed like they had quite a few (I didn’t count them) but I was about the tenth person to grab one.

I think a lot people don’t realize that they’ll be buying this out of pure hype. Again, another good job of Nintendo of marketing this thing and not creating too much inventory. I waited in line for my Wii, and now it’s collecting dust. The luster will quickly wear out.
